Blockheads PC v0.3.0

v0.3.0

Blockheads PC v0.3.0

Alpha. A desktop chat, server pages that work like on the phone, and the tablet layout by default.

Chat

  • Desktop chat. The chat opens as a panel on the left. Messages read from the oldest to the newest, at the
bottom; the input line sits under them with SEND beside it, with a caret, and long messages wrap.
  • Rows. Each message shows the sender's picture at the left, the date small at the top right and the message
beside the picture, in a smaller font.
  • T opens the chat (like Minecraft; you can rebind it in Settings > Controls).
  • Stays open. After a message is sent the input line stays open for the next one; CLOSE closes the whole chat in
one press, and the pause menu closes it too.
  • The game no longer pauses itself for being idle while you type.
  • The server's own chat lines show the server's picture (needs Blockheads Server v0.4.0).

Server pages

  • The welcome message and the help pages open in a window of their own, as the phone shows them: their
pictures and scripts work (so "Show More Info" opens), links open in your browser.
  • The window is a sandbox: it cannot call the launcher, read your files or send requests, and it never leaves the
page. The launcher's own commands are now behind Tauri's access control list, so only the launcher's windows can
    use them.

Mods

  • Rejoining a modded server with the same mods skips the prompt; it only asks again when a mod changed or for a
server you have not joined before.
  • Cosmetics on your own blockhead. Hats and other cosmetics from /hat show on your own character and come off
    again with /hat none.
  • Per-mod hot reload and timings in the F9 panel; mod blocks drawn with the mod's texture.

Launcher

  • Tablet layout by default (recommended in Settings > Graphics); a zoom you chose yourself is kept.
  • The UI scale percentage follows the slider while you drag it.

Install

Download the installer for your system from the assets below: Linux (AppImage, deb, rpm), Windows (NSIS, MSI),
macOS (dmg), each for x86_64 and arm64. You bring your own copy of The Blockheads; nothing from the game is
included. Installers on macOS are not notarised yet. v0.2.0 shows an update notice for this release.

Blockheads PC v0.2.0

Alpha. The big change: the PC client now loads mods, so you can join modded servers and play with cosmetics.

Mods

  • Mod loader. Client mods run inside the launcher's game: Lua and WebAssembly mods, plus native client mods
(libbhmod host) and JVM client mods (needs Java; switch and Java folder in Settings > Mods).
  • Join dialog. Joining a modded server shows what the server asks for, with a switch per optional mod, a retry
button, the player count, and the hash of the mods received. If a mod changed, it updates after the game.
  • Mods screen. Browse, install, update and remove mods in the launcher (Mods area and Settings > Mods), with a
clear install flow, permission and danger badges, and the mods of the servers you play on.
  • In-game mod UI. Join prompt, F9 panel and toasts inside the game.
  • Cosmetics. Hair, clothing and other cosmetics from mods, with auto-wear and hair masks.
  • Weapon skins. Mods can reskin the tool a blockhead holds.
  • Mod items. Items added by mods get names, validity checks and icons made from the mod's pictures.
  • Client and server talk. Mods can call services on the server and the other way round; world events and the
player position reach client mods, and typed /commands work end to end.
  • Developer tools. Live mod status, developer reload (also for a game running in its own window), live reload,
    and joining localhost.

Launcher

  • Update notice. The launcher tells you when a new release is out; click to install, then "Restart now"
restarts it. Updates are never installed on their own.
  • Tray icon. Clicking the tray icon while the window is open now hides it (and shows it when hidden).
  • A note left by the game asks the launcher for an update check at its next start.
  • The launcher window follows the window size; new game zoom setting plus a UI scale fine-tune.
  • Russian and Kazakh translations of the launcher and the game's messages; Turkish, Russian and Kazakh wording polish.

Fixes

  • The game view is phone-sized by default.
  • Audio stays silent until the first frame is shown.
  • The setup summary rows show again.
  • Windows drive paths are treated as local mod index files.
  • A mod is compatible with any API version the SDK serves.

v0.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@duruer duruer released this 20 Oct 20:50
v0.1.0
4a48734

First public pre-release of blockheads-pc. It runs your own copy of the Android build of The Blockheads (1.7.4 to 1.7.6) on a PC through an embedded ARM JIT (dynarmic). Licensed GPL-3.0-or-later.

No game files are included and nothing is downloaded: you provide your own APK. On first start the launcher asks for it.

Platforms

All six are built and tested in CI (whole workspace, every test; Linux x86_64 also runs the 100% coverage gate and a headless in-game smoke test locally). Online play uses real host sockets on all of them.

Platform Download
Linux x86_64 .AppImage, .deb, .rpm (amd64 / x86_64)
Linux arm64 .AppImage, .deb, .rpm (aarch64 / arm64)
Windows x86_64 _x64-setup.exe (NSIS) or _x64_en-US.msi
Windows arm64 _arm64-setup.exe (NSIS) or _arm64_en-US.msi
macOS Intel _x64.dmg
macOS Apple Silicon _aarch64.dmg

Every bundle contains the launcher and the game runner (bhpc-run sidecar) only.

How to install

  • Linux: AppImage: chmod +x Blockheads*.AppImage and run it. Or install the .deb (sudo apt install ./Blockheads*.deb) or .rpm (sudo dnf install ./Blockheads*.rpm).
  • Windows: run the setup .exe (per-user install, no admin needed) or the .msi. The bundles are not code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn: "More info" -> "Run anyway".
  • macOS: open the .dmg, accept the licence, drag Blockheads PC to Applications. The app is ad-hoc signed but not notarized: on first start right-click it -> Open (or System Settings -> Privacy & Security -> "Open Anyway").

Then start Blockheads PC and pick your own The Blockheads APK.

Notes

  • Unofficial fan project, not affiliated with the game's developers.
  • On Apple Silicon (16 KiB pages) a few invalid guest memory accesses next to valid ones are not trapped; this only matters for buggy code.

Heads-up: on Windows and macOS the game itself has not been tried by real players yet (it passes all tests and CI). If something goes wrong, please open an issue.
