Part 7: Enclosure and Mounting

Important

In design. The v3 enclosure has not been designed yet. You can build, wire, flash, and bench-test a complete pair of gloves, but you cannot yet mount them on a glove for daily wear. No substitute enclosure is recommended.

There is no v3 enclosure design yet. This page exists to record what the enclosure needs to do, not to walk you through building one — that step doesn't exist. See Build Status for the full list of what's incomplete across the wiki.

What the enclosure needs to do

Whoever designs it — us, or you — the enclosure has to satisfy the same three requirements:

  • House the assembled PCB from Part 1 Ordering the PCB and a LiPo battery.
  • Mount to the back of the glove.
  • Route all five tactor harnesses from Part 6 Wiring the Glove Harness out to the fingertips without pinching or straining the wires.
  • House the BLE antenna and its pigtail (see Parts and Tools List), with the pigtail routed sensibly rather than crimped or strained against the enclosure walls.

The earlier-generation case is not a substitute

The earlier-generation ABS case will not fit the v3 board and should not be used as a workaround. It was cut for a different board footprint with 4-pin connectors. The v3 board is built around the Seeed XIAO ESP32-S3 and has six 2-pin JST-PH sockets (five motor ports plus the battery port) — a different shape, a different connector standard, and no way to make the old case fit without modifying both the case and the harness. Don't attempt it; don't treat it as interim housing.

Designing your own

If you want to design an enclosure now rather than wait, start from the board model:

Until an enclosure exists, the build stops at a fully wired, bench-tested pair of glove electronics — see Part 8 First Power On and Full Bench Test — sitting loose rather than mounted for wear.
