I have the impression that the original Flatnotes is not maintained anymore. Are you planning on becoming the new maintainer of flatnotes? Because I am already using your enhanced version in a productive environment I was wondering where I should put any programming effort.

I have created an issue regarding non-ascii chars in passwords with the original flatnotes back in February 2026, but it hasn't even been acknowledged yet. If I were to fix this and provide a PR in your fork, would you accept it (under the pretense that my PR actually fixes things, of course)?

No, I don’t plan to become the maintainer of the original project. I focus on maintaining Flatnotes-Enhanced as a separate fork, with its own features and direction.

About your PR for non-ASCII characters in passwords:
Yes, I’d be happy to consider your PR for Flatnotes-Enhanced! Since I’m not a professional developer, I’ll need to review and test it carefully before merging, but I’m open to contributions that fix bugs or improve the project.

Here’s how we can make it work:

1. You create a PR in my fork with your changes.
2. I’ll review the code (even if it’s just a few lines, I’ll check it thoroughly).
3. I’ll test it locally to ensure it works and doesn’t break anything.
4. If everything looks good, I’ll merge it, and your fix will be included in the next release.

Hey Bob, I am unfortuantely not able to create a PR in your (forked) repo, some setting is preventing me from doing so.

I have tested the changes on my local machine and was able to successfully login with a password that contained the character ü. Here is the docker run command I have used after building the container:

Thank you for offering the PR—I really appreciate it!

After testing, I’ve confirmed that the fix works. I’ve already implemented the UTF-8 encoding changes in local.py. Both usernames and passwords now fully support non-ASCII characters (such as umlauts and accented characters).

The fix will be included in the next release (v1.7.2).

Thanks again for bringing this to my attention—it’s an important improvement for users with special characters in their credentials!
