This release upgrades the Tor built into breakoutd and the Qt client from 0.4.8.12 to 0.4.9.15. Since October 28, 2026, the Tor network has required protocols that 0.4.8.12 does not have, and every earlier release stops shortly after it starts.

It is a required upgrade for everyone — every node, every wallet, every platform. Nothing needs migrating: the block chain, the wallet and the node's onion address carry over as they are, with no resync.

There are no consensus, network protocol or fork schedule changes. The protocol version is unchanged at 61030.

What was wrong

A node on an earlier release starts, begins loading its block index, and exits a few seconds to a few minutes later. debug.log gives no reason — it often just stops part way through Loading block index..., which looks like a database problem but is not one. The reason is in tor/tor.log in the data directory:

[err] At least one protocol listed as required in the consensus is not supported by this
version of Tor. ... The missing protocols are: Desc=3 Microdesc=3

Tor's response to a consensus it cannot satisfy is to call exit(1). Tor runs as a thread inside the client rather than as a separate process, so that exit takes the whole client down with it.

What's changed

  • The embedded Tor is now 0.4.9.15, which supports Desc=1-4 and Microdesc=1-3.
  • Breakout's own changes to its Tor tree — the Windows build fixes and the typedef guards — are carried forward unchanged.

Updating a node built from source

Back up the data directory, including wallet.dat, then pull and rebuild in src with make -f makefile.unix breakoutd (or makefile.osx on macOS) and restart. tor/tor.log should show Bootstrapped 100% and no missing protocols error.
