EncryptEd 1.3
Changelog
1.3 — 2026-10-26
Editor improvements
- Added GUI syntax highlighting with automatic file-type detection, Markdown
highlighting, and support for the languages available inetui. Incremental
rescanning keeps multiline comments and strings correct while editing. - Added
etuithemes, JSON highlighting, horizontal scrolling for long lines,
and support for editing text from standard input. - Added an XDG desktop installer for Linux.
Security and file handling
- Added File → Lock Now and optional inactivity locking in the GUI. Locking
wipes the open document and reopens it after unlock. - Improved cleanup of plaintext, password, clipboard, and stored undo/redo data.
FLTK's internal undo buffers remain a documented residual. GUI document
buffers and GUI/etuipassword buffers use best-effort memory locking, which
platform limits can prevent. - Added GUI clipboard controls, Windows clipboard sensitivity markers, and
Windows screen-capture exclusion while a document is open. - Hardened Windows process settings and executable search paths, disabled core
dumps, and strengthened Linux binary hardening. - Enforced the minimum Argon2 parameters when decoding and preserved existing
file permission bits when saving. - Restricted external URL launching to supported schemes.
Build and maintenance
- Updated vendored dependencies and build instructions.
- Added tests for syntax rescanning, GUI buffer wiping, terminal themes, stdin
editing, and save permissions.
encryptEd 1.2
EncryptEd 1.2 adds bundled Lua plugins to the graphical and terminal editors and improves everyday editing.
Changes
- Install 12 default Lua plugins from the Plugins menu, preserving user-modified scripts. Process selected text or the whole document, with interactive prompts and cancellation.
- Use Lua plugins in etui, with text changes grouped into a single undo action.
- Find next with F3, find previous with F2, and open search and replace with Ctrl+R.
- Improved mouse navigation, dialog buttons, file opening, menu toggling, and terminal cursor rendering.
- Optional vertical scrollbars, human-readable size counters, and expanded About details.
- Release binaries use -O2 optimization.

encryptEd-1.2-linux-x86_64.tar.gzincludes encryptEd, etui, the CLI, default plugins, desktop integration files, and home-folder installation instructions. Built on Debian 13; requires glibc 2.38 or newer and standard X11/Xft libraries for the GUI. Runbin/encryptEdorbin/etui, or mergebin/andshare/into~/.local/. SHA256SUMS.txtcontains package checksums.
Choose Plugins > Install Default Plugins after installation. User Lua files are stored in ~/.local/share/encryptEd/plugins on Linux (or under $XDG_DATA_HOME) and %APPDATA%/encryptEd/plugins on Windows.
Validation
All 11 registered tests pass on Linux. The packaged GUI also passes a startup, Lua input dialog, and cancellation rollback check under a virtual display. Windows binaries cross-compile successfully and depend only on Windows system DLLs; Windows runtime and installer behavior have not been tested on a Windows host. The optional full GUI mouse automation did not complete successfully under the headless test environment.
GPLv3. Source and build instructions are included in the repository at this release tag; dependency license notices are included in the downloads.
