BarTap 1.6.1

Choose a tag to compare

@ChenFangfc ChenFangfc released this 03 Nov 05:36

A tidy menu bar, live system stats and your AI coding usage, in one small macOS app that never fights you for the mouse.

Install: open BarTap.dmg and drag BarTap to Applications. BarTap is self-signed, not notarized. If macOS blocks the first launch, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

New in 1.6.1

  • Stats items kept in Hidden open from the shelf again. Choosing Power, AI usage or any other BarTap item in the shelf (or in search) showed "Couldn't open"; now its details open right where you chose it.
  • The promo film now shows Power: where every watt goes, and the details behind every item.

  • Power. A new stats item: what the charger delivers, what goes into (or out of) the battery, what the whole Mac uses, and the watts of the CPU, GPU, memory, display and Neural Engine. Put any of them in the menu bar, one or several (Settings › Stats › Power › Customize…). Rest the pointer on it for the details: a flow diagram from the adapter or battery to each part, moving as the power moves, the last two minutes, battery voltage, current, temperature, capacity, health and cycle count, the adapter's rating and what it delivers right now, and each app's power and the energy it has used. No administrator password, nothing installed.
  • Settings › Layout no longer freezes for a moment. The work behind it moved off the main thread, and it skips the background processes that can't have menu bar icons.
  • Sharp, correct icons on the shelf. Each icon is matched to its app exactly (no more icons swapped between apps), empty captures are thrown away, and icons are drawn pixel for pixel at their own size. The shelf and the details windows now glide in and out.
  • Lighter. Menu bar figures redraw only when they really change, hidden stats items stop redrawing with several displays connected, and BarTap gives back memory it no longer needs.

BarTap 1.5.1

@ChenFangfc ChenFangfc released this 02 Nov 21:37

New in 1.5.1

  • Stay Awake with Lid Closed says where it stands. Settings › Power-ups shows one card: on (green) or off, what that means when you close the lid, and the one button that changes it. The BarTap menu reads "Turn On Stay Awake with Lid Closed…" or "● Stay Awake with Lid Closed is on (click to turn off)" instead of a checkmark.

Install: open BarTap.dmg and drag BarTap to Applications. BarTap is self-signed, not notarized. If macOS blocks the first launch, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

New in 1.5.0

  • Stay awake with the lid closed. The BarTap button's menu (right-click it) and Settings › Power-ups can keep the Mac running with the lid shut, as sudo pmset -a disablesleep 1 does. Turning it on asks for an administrator password once; turning it off doesn't. Sleep also comes back by itself when BarTap quits, or on battery at 10% or below. Don't put the Mac in a bag while it's on.

BarTap 1.4.2

@ChenFangfc ChenFangfc released this 02 Nov 19:31

New in 1.4.2

  • Video downloads have their own tab. Settings › Downloads starts with a link field: paste or drop a link and click Download Video… (or press Return). The download settings moved there from Power-ups, and Download Video… now sits near the top of the BarTap button's menu (right-click the button).
  • Saved icon images leave out BarTap's own stats items, which are always drawn live.

Fixes in 1.4.1

  • Apply works again with apps in full screen. macOS can keep a second, invisible copy of every menu bar icon (seen with apps in full screen). BarTap took it for the end of the bar, so Apply found nothing to move and said the divider wasn't drawn. It now reads the copy that is drawn; so do the check for a BarTap button behind the notch and the hover details.
  • Clear icons in the shelf and in Settings › Layout. Captured icons take the shelf's own colour (white on a dark shelf, black on a light one) instead of the black they were captured in, come from the sharpest display, and are kept across restarts.
  • Apply's messages name BarTap's own items ("AI Usage") instead of "BarTap".

  • Your stats items in Settings › Layout. CPU, memory, AI usage and the rest now sit in the rows with every other icon: drag them anywhere, or into Hidden to make room beside the notch. Apply moves only the icons you dragged, each in one move, and on a crowded bar BarTap briefly makes room so every icon can be read and moved. Hidden stats items stop redrawing until you show them.
  • Peek or keep. Rest the pointer on a stats item for half a second and its details open; they close when the pointer leaves. Click it and they stay until you click elsewhere. Passing over does nothing. The BarTap button works the same way for your hidden icons (or the shelf). The delay is in Settings › Reveal.
  • Choose the expand/collapse button right in Settings › Layout: the BarTap logo, an arrow, a dot, an ellipsis, lines or a grid.
  • Video downloads, redone. Paste or drop a link and see the video: pick one of the qualities it really has (with sizes), the format and where to save. Options cover subtitles, playlists, a time range, cover and chapters, skipping sponsor segments, signing in through your browser, a speed limit and file names. Pause, resume, cancel, open. An optional shortcut opens it from anywhere.
  • Fixes. One arrangement for every display, with the Layout page naming a display that is too narrow; a clearer hint when the BarTap button doesn't fit beside the notch.

BarTap 1.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ChenFangfc ChenFangfc released this 02 Nov 07:58

New in 1.3.0

  • Arrange icons by dragging. Settings › Layout shows your icons in rows: Shown, Hidden and Always Hidden. Drag icons between the rows and along them (or right-click one), then click Apply. BarTap makes the ⌘-drags for you, one icon at a time, with the pointer hidden and put back afterwards, and stops for good the moment you touch the mouse or keyboard. Nothing moves before you click Apply; hiding itself still never fakes a click.
  • The same on every display. One arrangement for all displays: a wide screen hides exactly what a narrow one hides. The Layout page no longer leaves every icon revealed while it is open, and it names a display that is too narrow for every shown icon.
  • Volume, Bluetooth and a 3-in-1 icon. New stats items: volume (scroll on it to change the volume, switch output and input devices), Bluetooth devices with their batteries (AirPods left, right and case too) and one-click connect or disconnect, and battery, Wi-Fi and volume in one small icon.
  • Battery power flow. The battery dropdown shows adapter, Mac and battery in watts, health, cycles and which apps use the energy. A ±W readout is available for the bar.
  • Video downloads. BarTap menu › Download Video…: paste a link, pick Best, 1080p, 720p, audio only or MP3, and watch it download. BarTap uses yt-dlp from Homebrew, or fetches its official release from GitHub (checksum verified) when you ask. Download only videos you have the right to.

Connect and Disconnect ask for Bluetooth permission the first time; reading devices and batteries needs none.

BarTap 1.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ChenFangfc ChenFangfc released this 02 Nov 03:25

A tidy menu bar, live system stats and your AI coding usage, in one small macOS app that never touches your mouse.

Install: open BarTap.dmg and drag BarTap to Applications. BarTap is self-signed, not notarized. If macOS blocks the first launch, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

New in 1.2.0

  • Settings › Layout shows your whole menu bar, real icons in their real order. Drag │ (and ‖) to choose which icons are hidden. BarTap only moves its own dividers; to reorder other icons, ⌘-drag them in the menu bar. Every icon stays shown while the page is open.
  • Real icons everywhere. With Screen Recording on, the shelf and the Layout page show each icon as it looks in the menu bar, so two icons of one app (say, iStat Menus' CPU and memory) are easy to tell apart.
  • Claude usage credits. When your Claude plan pays for usage beyond its limits with credits, BarTap shows how much of the monthly limit is used or left, in the dropdown and as a menu bar item (ring + amount).
  • Lighter. Settings is built only when you open it and gives its memory back when closed; slightly tighter spacing between BarTap's own items; a more compact 5h / 7d plan readout.
  • Fixes. Hidden and shown icons are no longer mixed up for a few seconds after BarTap re-creates its items; an out-of-date 5-hour plan figure is no longer shown; Claude's session limit no longer appears as a second weekly limit.

BarTap 1.1.0

@ChenFangfc ChenFangfc released this 01 Nov 21:17

New in 1.1.0

  • AI usage. Tokens and cost of Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Kilo Code, Qwen Code and Kimi Code, read from their logs on your Mac (no API keys, no sign-in, nothing uploaded). Today, this week, month, quarter or year; all agents, a few or one; their total or each side by side. Cost is what the tokens would cost at API prices. Plan limits (5-hour and weekly, used or left) as Claude Code and Codex report them.
  • Stats layouts. Build each item from elements in any order (graph, bar, pie, ring, percentage, U:/F:, R:/W:, ↑↓, label…) or pick a preset, and reorder the items.
  • Shelf. On a notched Mac, a click opens a dropdown with the hidden icons (Accessibility); with Screen Recording it shows their real images. Click one to open its menu.
  • Permissions that stick. Grants now survive updates, and Settings › About can reset and ask again.
  • Fixes: Reset Positions keeps the toggle visible on narrow displays once stats items are back; stats items appear right away on a first launch while the built-in display is asleep.

Upgrading from 1.0.0: quit BarTap, replace it in Applications, open it again. If Accessibility was granted before, grant it once more (1.0.0 was ad-hoc signed).
