Improvised lockpicks recipe tweak #39928
Improvised lockpicks recipe tweak #39928

…1. Alternatively you can use tool with bolt turning quality 1 (e.g. pliers). Also now it additionally requires a tool with metal sawing 1 quality (e.g. hacksaw) Also increased time from 1 minute to 10 minutes.
Serious Question: I thought the improvised lockpick was meant to be an absolute early game item for unlocking locked doors? Wouldn't this... remove its utility? |
It is. But its recipe is far for making any sense. Do tell me: could you ever craft a tiny, evenly flattened tool fully capable of picking all sorts of locks - without any skills whatsoever, from a random piece of metal junk and with help of a random rock? |
IMHO a better solution to the real problem (that the improvised lockpick is not evenly thin, as you rightly pointed out) would be to create lockpicking qualities and/or make the improvised lockpick only work a limited number of times. What do you think? |
To be honest, I'm with Night-Pryanik on this one: |
They are already in the game. Improvised lockpicks and all hairpins have quality 3, locksmith's set has quality 5, bionic lockpick has quality 40.
On lower levels of lockpicking skill lockpicks work almost exactly as you described because they are breaking (almost guaranteed) during use. Thus every lockpick has only 5 uses. |
Maybe drop improvised lockpick below hairpins? Like, lockpicking quality 1? That way, innawoods starts are not completely excluded from lockpicking, but they are at a significant disadvantage. |
Looking at DYI lockpick videos on youtube, it seems like they are pretty much all filed out of thin flat pieces of metal such as wind shield wipers. You could probably make one with a small metal sheet and FILING quality, but then they are not really improvised, but rather professional looking. The only other make your own lockpick guides are with bobby pins or paper clips. As current improvised lockpicks have the same lockpicking quality as hairpins and break just as easily after a few uses, I propose we make the improvised lockpick use simply hair pins as an ingredient. Perhaps we should also introduce paper clips and have that used as an alternative ingredient as they are rather ubiquitous and it's easy to justify putting a bunch of them in a e.g. kitchen drawer. For reference, Youtube user Bosnianbill has a detailed series on how to make your own lockpicks: |
This would be redundant. In that case it would be better to remove the improvised lockpicks altogether and make hairpins fill their niche. The same for possibly added paper clips - just add them a lockpicking quality and call it a day. |
Here's an alternative proposal: |
Would probably make more sense to make the improvised lockpicks use wire and nothing else, or wire and anthing with basic plier abilites, with the end result being stuff like this: https://www.itstactical.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/paperclip-lockpick-2.jpg The recipe you are suggesting seems more like it should produce the locksmithing kit. |
That's because the description of improvised lockpicks explicitly states that it's a |
Instead of replacing the current "from scrap metal" recipe, I added an alternative "from wire" recipe. It doesn't require hacksaw, requires 5 minutes and 2 wires. |
Your source uses tools...

That recipe is dumb. You can make improvised lockpick without any tools at
all - you just need a bendable wire and hands that are strong enough to
bend it.

And I can imagine that you easily find a scrap metal piece that is almost
the rate shape for the job, maybe with a little bit of hammering. Sure, it
won't nowhere near as good as factory made lockpick, but that is the whole
point of improvised lockpicks.

Summary
SUMMARY: Balance "Improvised lockpicks recipe tweak."
Purpose of change
One shouldn't be able to craft a fine tool from any nearby scrap metal and any nearby rock.
Describe the solution
HAMMER
1 quality toHAMMER_FINE
1 quality. This includes all proper hammers, excluding primitive and makeshift hammers which now lostHAMMER_FINE
1 quality.WRENCH
1 quality to flatten and then bend the piece of metal you cut from a scrap metal with a...SAW_M
2 quality.Describe alternatives you've considered
Don't require hacksaw, but I just can't imagine crafting a 5-ml lockpick from a 250-ml piece of scrap metal without cutting it first.
Testing
Game starts without errors.
Additional context
Crafting improvised lockpicks should be much more harder now as it requires additional tools and 10 times more time.
