GFOpenBrowser 0.9.0 RC1

The first release candidate of GFOpenBrowser, the WebKit web browser for AmigaOS 3.2 (68040 or 68060 with its FPU).

Install: unpack the archive and double-click Install-GFOpenBrowser (the Amiga Installer; Novice, Intermediate and Expert levels). Reboot afterwards, then double-click GFOpenBrowser. Files the Installer replaces are kept as .before-20261104.

New since 0.8.4 test:

  • Animated GIFs play, with their own delays and loop counts (gfopengif.datatype 47.1, included and installed).
  • Cairo is out of the engine. WebBrowserEngine is 43,332,880 bytes.
  • PNG output through gfopenpng.datatype 47.5 (included and installed), now that cairo is gone.
  • GlowIcons for the drawer, the browser, the readme and the Installer.

Checked on a fresh copy of an AmigaOS 3.2 system: BBC News, Wikipedia, example.com (Arabic, CJK, Cyrillic) and an animated GIF all display correctly.

Built from main 888bda4 (engine from 65acb03). Parts: gfopenfont 63ead74, gfopenlayout da4a066, gfopendatatypes fb8e382 (gif, png, stream), gfopengpu 0.25.

Designed, tested and delivered by The AmigaChrome Team.

Short: Small web browser for AmigaOS 3.2 (no WebKit)
Author: AmiCradle Team
Uploader: UPLOADER-PLACEHOLDER
Type: comm/www
Version: 0.4.2
Architecture: m68k-amigaos >= 3.2
Distribution: Aminet

GFOpenBrowser Lite is a small web browser for AmigaOS 3.2: a GadTools window
that opens http:// and https:// pages and lays them out, in about 100 KB.

What it shows:

  • headings, paragraphs, lists, quotes, preformatted text, rules
  • links: click one to follow it, or pick it from Links...
  • pictures, through the system's datatypes (PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and
    more, whichever datatypes are installed), scaled to their box
  • CSS: the page's <style>, style= and up to eight linked stylesheets;
    element, class and ID selectors; colours, sizes, margins, padding,
    alignment, display: none
  • Back, Reload, an address field, and ARexx: OPENURL on the
    port AMICRADLE.BROWSER (GFOpenMail opens its links that way)

What it doesn't do: JavaScript, forms, frames, table grids, web fonts. For
those there is GFOpenBrowser on WebKit (much larger).

Requirements:

  • AmigaOS 3.2 or newer
  • a 68040 with FPU (hard float; not an LC or EC040)
  • a TCP/IP stack (bsdsocket.library)
  • for https://: GFOpenTLS (LIBS:gfopentls.library and gfopencrypto.library) and
    its CA list, S:GFOpenTLS/ca-bundle.pem (GFOpenUp's GFOpenTLS part)

Its page engine, weblayout, is built on GFOpenLayout and kept behind one
header so that it can become a shared weblayout.library.

OpenBrowser test version, 23 October 2026

@SacredTrees SacredTrees released this 23 Oct 10:56

A test version of OpenBrowser for AmigaOS 3.2 (68040 with FPU). Things will still go wrong; please report them.

Install: unpack OpenBrowser-test-20261023b.lha and double-click Install-OpenBrowser. It runs in the Installer (SYS:System/Installer), as in the 0.8.0 test version:

  • It checks for OS 3.2 and a 68040 or 68060 with FPU.
  • It asks where the drawer goes (Work: by default). The drawer now needs about 87 MB, not 195 MB.
  • It makes sure of opentls.library 1.2+, opencrypto.library 2.1+, json.library and the CA bundle. An older library is kept as *.before-20261023b.
  • It copies the Unicode data to LOCALE:Unicode when there is room.
  • If an older engine is installed in LIBS:WebBrowser, it is kept as WebBrowserEngine.before-20261023b, and webbrowser.library then uses the engine in the drawer.
  • Nothing is deleted.

From a Shell, Execute Install in the drawer does the same without questions. It does not yet check for free space before it copies the Unicode data to LOCALE:Unicode, so on a nearly full System: please use the Installer.

What changed since the 0.8.0 test version:

  • One engine. The package ships only WebBrowserEngine (75,811,000 bytes) and one copy of the fonts, settings and Unicode data. The archive is 47.3 MB (0.8.1 test: 80.0 MB) and the installed drawer about 87 MB (0.8.1 test: 173 MB).
  • json.library is copied to LIBS: by both the Installer and Execute Install. The engine needs it.
  • The launcher opens LIBS:webbrowser.library, or the copy in its own drawer before it is installed.
  • Smaller and faster engine than 0.8.0: plain inlining outside the hot code (patch 0056), json.library for JSON (patch 0058) and pc-relative code in one hunk.
  • Test tool fix: our page-timing tool now counts a page as finished once the network has been quiet for 2 seconds. Pages with endless animations (such as Reddit) were timed at its 160-second limit before; the browser itself was never that slow.

Measured in lab copies of two real OS 3.2.3 instances, installed with the Installer (seconds, loaded / painted):

Page Instance-32 copy Instance-14 copy
Test page 0.30 / 0.34 0.62 / 0.66
DOM bench 2.00 (JavaScript 1.51) 2.04 (JavaScript 1.47)
XHTML 0.32 / 0.34 0.42 / 0.44
Wikipedia 2.06 / 2.14 2.06 / 2.14
BBC News 4.46 / 18.40 4.40 / 16.76
Reddit, loaded 9.88 7.58

Known issues:

  • Some sites say sessionStorage and MediaError are missing.
  • Animated images in some adverts are drawn with stripes.
  • After Reddit, the Amiga sometimes does not return to the Shell when the program ends.
  • Execute Install has no free-space check before the LOCALE:Unicode copy (see above).

Extras in the archive: javascript.library, JS and JavaScriptEngine, and json.library.

@SacredTrees SacredTrees released this 22 Oct 17:14

A test version of OpenBrowser for AmigaOS 3.2 (68040 with FPU), with every optimisation on main built in. Things will still go wrong; please report them.

Install: unpack OpenBrowser-test-20261022.lha and double-click Install-OpenBrowser. It runs in the Installer (SYS:System/Installer):

  • It checks for OS 3.2 and a 68040 or 68060 with FPU.
  • It asks where the drawer goes (Work: by default; it needs about 195 MB).
  • It makes sure of opentls.library 1.2+, opencrypto.library 2.1+, json.library and the CA bundle. An older library is kept as *.before-20261022.
  • If webbrowser.library is installed, it keeps the old engine as WebBrowserEngine.before-20261022 and makes LIBS:WebBrowser/WebBrowserEngine a small script that runs the new engine in the drawer. Every program using the library gets the new engine, and nothing big goes to System:.
  • Nothing is deleted.

Novice, Expert and pretend mode all work, and the log goes into the installed drawer. From a Shell, Execute Install in the drawer does the same without questions.

The engine: WebKit at 54fe1539 with all 51 patches on main (0001–0052), built from a clean tree with OB_OPTIMIZE=js, OB_GC_SECTIONS=1 and OB_ICU_DATA=file (trimmed ICU data). That includes:

  • the 68k template JIT and all its work (0020–0052);
  • HTTP/2 and the HTTP disk cache;
  • E-clock timers;
  • the own malloc;
  • OXP for XML;
  • curl on OpenTLS;
  • the size cuts.

OpenBrowser.engine is 89,680,744 bytes (0.7: 94,221,904). The visit cache (0018) is not included.

Measured in lab copies of two real OS 3.2.3 instances (ms, loaded / painted). Install was run first, as above.

Page Instance-32 copy Instance-14 copy 0.7-era engine, Instance-32 copy

Reddit 9,560 / 12,600 6,680 loaded 19,180 / 20,860

Known issues:

  • After Reddit, the Amiga sometimes does not return to the Shell when the program ends. This is also seen with the 0.7-era engine.
  • Some sites say sessionStorage and MediaError are missing.
