Legal Mode & Offroad Function
What is Legal Mode?
Legal mode activates the speed limiter (e.g., 25 km/h) and restricts walk assist to walking speed, so the bike is road-legal.
How to Enable Legal Mode:
In Bafang Canable Tool, go to the General tab and set Coaster Brake Support = 1.
Temporarily Disabling the Speed Limit (Offroad):
When Legal Mode is on, you can temporarily remove the speed limit with a button sequence on your display.
Procedure (for HMI 245 display):
- From any assist level other than Eco, press: Eco → Off → Eco
- Each press must be done within about 0.25-1 second of the previous one
If done correctly, the display will briefly show:
9 km/h -> Offroad is on (no speed limit)
8 km/h -> Offroad is off (speed limit back on)
After ~1 second, the normal speed display returns.
How It Works (Simple Explanation)
The sequence acts like a key code. When you enter Eco → Off → Eco, the controller compares it to a preset code (default: 202). If it matches, the speed limit toggles on or off.
Behavior Summary:
| Legal Mode setting | Sequence entered | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Off | - | No speed limit at all |
| On | Not entered | Speed limit active (legal) |
| On | Eco -> Off -> Eco | Speed limit temporarily removed until next restart or next code input |
What Happens After Power Off:
The speed limit comes back after turning the bike off and on again. To remove it again, just enter Eco → Off → Eco once more.
Note for Other Display Models
This sequence was tested with the HMI 245 display. Other Bafang displays may send different signals - if it doesn't work on yours, check which button corresponds to "Eco" on your display.
