I have been enjoying this mod a lot with my buddy. We got into a discussion, how this mod could tie into the world perfectly.
I am throwing this here, in hopes some of the contributors might take up on it.
The Biters are on multiple planets, without any real reason how this could have happened.
How about this: (lore dump)
The biters are genetically advanced species, capable of configuring their form as they grow, hence why there are different kinds of them like spitters, etc. As threat of enemy grows, they become more advanced or even de-evolve to save resources. Some time ago, before the player(s) arrived, they had removed other competing species from the planed (hence why there is no other life besides vegetation and fish). They do have a nifty hive-mind capability (within a certain range). When humans came, they started polluting and messing with the nature, forcing biters to evolve once again (both intelligence and strength) and as humans reached space, colonizing other planets, it felt right for them to grow biological spaceships capable of fighting back the disease the humans are and save the planet systems for exploitation.
Short Implementation overview:
How about a feature, where biters can evolve to space-faring species and act a bit like Wraiths in Stargate :) End game would be somewhat a race to secure the systems and not let them go too far.
Since they have biological spaceships, they are not as mighty (slow, vulnerable, weak weapons, no shields, but can regenerate), but do have the numbers. Each planet has separate evolution state and biters meeting lower evolved biters may exchange information, so your job is to keep them on the planet surface and deal with the consequences when they escape and start a big existential crisis (attacking infrastructure from orbit, deploying hives, attacking orbital stations.
