Homework 2
The project we have decided to move forward with is a digital level using an accelerometer. The microcontroller will be an Atmel ATmega328. Depending on the inclination of the level when it is placed on a surface, indicator LEDs will be lit up in imitation of the bubble on an analog level. There will be a power switch on the side to turn it on and off, and it will be powered with lithium ion batteries.
Requirement checklist:
- 1 Sensor? Accelerometer
- 1 Actuator? Multiple LEDs
- Digital or Analog Processor? ATmega328
- Safe? Yes
- Schematic in progress using EagleCAD
- PCB will be correctly sized
- May have second PCB for LED assembly
- PCB designed from scratch
- >= 25% surface mount components: 100% will be surface mount
- Components will all be larger than 0603
- Will be built by our hands
- Enclosure will be 3D printed

Laser Tripwire
Team #Sagutinhoun could design and build a Laser Tripwire Alarm that detects objects that cross the laser beam using a photoresistor. If the beam was crossed then the alarm will play an alarm tone through a speaker, and possibly flashing lights. This will be controlled using an Atmel ATMega microcontroller of some variety.
Pulse Monitor
Pulse sensor will use infrared emitter and detector to detect a pulse from a finger tip. The pulse sensor uses infrared light reflected by the blood from the fingertip. It turns the mechanical pulse action into electrical signal.
Couple of ways to display the data:
- Cascade of seven segment display.
- Graphic wave monitor
Fingerprint Door Lock
In the Fingerprint Door Lock design, only authorized users are permitted access to a locked room. A user’s fingerprints are initially scanned and recorded onto the fingerprint sensor. When the user wants to access a room, they will scan their fingerprint again, thus creating a second image to compare to the original. The unique patterns of each fingerprint are analyzed and determined if there is a match. The fingerprint sensor is connected to a microcontroller. If the fingerprint image matches the original, the microcontroller will send a signal to a solenoid. The energized solenoid will unlock and the user will be allowed access to the room.
