openMX 0.10.0
openMX is MX Unleashed (PS2, 2004) rewritten from scratch: the original's physics, tricks and timing, proved
tick for tick, on today's screens at any resolution, with split screen, online play and mods.
Download
| Platform | File | How to play |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | openmx-windows-x86_64.zip |
Unzip, then drop your ISO on openmx.exe once; start openmx.exe after |
| Linux / Steam Deck | openmx-linux-x86_64.tar.gz |
Unpack, run ./openmx your.iso (or drop the ISO on it) once; ./openmx after. For Steam (with artwork): run add-to-steam.sh |
| iPhone / iPad (iOS 15+) | add the source in one tap | Easiest: add the source in one tap (Feather, AltStore, SideStore), or add https://fizl0.github.io/apps/source.json under Sources by hand; install openMX from it and updates arrive there. Then put your ISO in Files → On My iPhone → openMX. Touch controls or a controller. Signing it yourself instead: openmx-ios.ipa (unsigned; Sideloadly, AltStore…) |
| Browser | openmx.dev | Nothing to install |
Every download above runs the native sim: the original's physics on your machine's plain floats, faster
than the PS2's arithmetic and not bit-for-bit with it. The menu's corner and --version say "native sim";
online, it meets every other native build of 0.10.0. (The exact, PS2-arithmetic build is tools/build.sh --exact-sim.)
What you need
Your own disc image of MX Unleashed (USA, SLUS-20767). No game data is included, and the game reads
your ISO on your own machine: nothing is uploaded.
New in 0.10.0
- The native sim. Every download now runs the original's physics on your machine's plain floats instead of copying the PS2's arithmetic: about twice as fast, so split screen on a Steam Deck holds 60 fps. It is no longer bit-for-bit with the original (rides feel the same, but can part by a hair over time). Online games meet only other native builds of the same version, not 0.9.x. A recorded tape now names its sim; tapes from older versions still play, but may drift from what was recorded. The menu's corner and
--versionsay "native sim" - The splash shows a New version notice with its Update, Download or Refresh button, and the build's version (or commit) small in its corner; the website's header shows it too
- The Kiowa helicopter: park it, switch into it, fly it and wreck it, with its engine, rotor wash and wreck sounds
- The rider is drawn from the riding ragdoll, with the original's give in the body
- Knockable props (free06's eyeballs, free09's balls) are knocked by a fallen rider, by the biplane and by each other; the biplanes in split screen and online hit each other
- Trucks you hit move as physical bodies, and a bike can ride on top of them
- Flips score as the original's again (the flip-at-the-start scoring is gone)
- Worlds can be downloaded from the mod store, on the desktop and in the browser, which now sees every mod the store installed; an MX World load can be cancelled
- The Garage's bike, paint and class pickers answer at once, one step per press
- MX vs. ATV handling works online: the room carries the Handling setting
- Under World Sky Global each map keeps its own sunlight
- Automatic render scale judges by the graphics card's own time, so it no longer drops and stays low
- Browser: pads the browser does not map keep their d-pad and triggers
