openMX 0.10.3
openMX is MX Unleashed (PS2, 2004) rewritten from scratch: the original's physics, tricks and timing, proved
tick for tick, on today's screens at any resolution, with split screen, online play and mods.
Download
| Platform | File | How to play |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | openmx-windows-x86_64.zip |
Unzip, then drop your ISO on openmx.exe once; start openmx.exe after |
| Linux / Steam Deck | openmx-linux-x86_64.tar.gz |
Unpack, run ./openmx your.iso (or drop the ISO on it) once; ./openmx after. For Steam (with artwork): run add-to-steam.sh |
| iPhone / iPad (iOS 15+) | add the source in one tap | Easiest: add the source in one tap (Feather, AltStore, SideStore), or add https://fizl0.github.io/apps/source.json under Sources by hand; install openMX from it and updates arrive there. Then put your ISO in Files → On My iPhone → openMX. Touch controls or a controller. Signing it yourself instead: openmx-ios.ipa (unsigned; Sideloadly, AltStore…) |
| Browser | openmx.dev | Nothing to install |
Every download above runs the native sim: the original's physics on your machine's plain floats, faster
than the PS2's arithmetic and not bit-for-bit with it;
online, it meets every other native build of 0.10.3. (The exact, PS2-arithmetic build is tools/build.sh --exact-sim.)
What you need
Your own disc image of MX Unleashed (USA, SLUS-20767). No game data is included, and the game reads
your ISO on your own machine: nothing is uploaded.
New in 0.10.3
- Big worlds load far faster and use less memory. "Every game: one world" starts riding in about 4 seconds instead of 30, and needs about 1.9 GB instead of 2.7 GB; the other combined worlds load about four times faster. Far-off ground is drawn at lower detail and streams in as you ride, so a Steam Deck no longer runs out of memory on them
- Track and world pictures in the track pick are made once and kept, instead of being re-shot in the background (which could take a big world's worth of memory)
- Fog is now one slider, from the original's distance out to the whole map, showing how far you can see
- Settings with three or more choices open a dropdown list
- A Button Icons setting (Auto by default) picks which controller's button pictures the game shows
- The track pick has a Favourites filter in place of Wrecks, and the Worlds filter now lists MX Unleashed's own disc worlds
- Game Modifiers by machine: pick Bike, Biplane, Kiowa, Cars or World and see only that machine's settings; online, the cars' modifiers reach every player's cars
- A new Untamed handling choice rides the bike with MX vs. ATV Untamed's tuning, backflip and 360s
- Holding R1 with Cross or Square now does the plain trick when there's no R1 version of it, instead of nothing
- Driven cars bump into the riders' bikes in split screen and online, and a crashed rider's bike gets hit by planes flown into it
- Knocking props about makes their collision sounds, as in the original
- A reset (L1+R1 or a wreck's put-back) shows the rider at the new spot at once, camera and all
- The biplane camera keeps the plane in view through a climb or a loop
- The splash screen's button hint no longer floats above the bottom of the screen
