Git Workbench v1.0.0 — First Public Release
Git Workbench v1.0.0 is the first public release of our open-source desktop Git client for Linux, Windows, and macOS.
Highlights
- Visual repository history: explore branch lanes, tags, commit details, and resizable author, SHA, and date/time columns.
- Everyday Git workflows: manage staging and diffs, commits, branches, remotes, tags, stashes, and worktrees across multiple repositories.
- Three-pane merge editor: compare current and incoming changes, edit the result, review remembered resolutions, and explicitly apply or continue an operation.
- History and recovery tools: interactive rebase, commit splitting, range comparisons, stacked branches, reflog browsing, and restore points before supported destructive operations.
- Pull request collaboration: GitHub sign-in, GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket Cloud request context, reviews, conversations, CI results, and separate review worktrees.
- Repository tools: Git LFS management, sparse checkout, command palette, and an integrated terminal.
- A configurable workspace: unified Home, pinned repositories, themes, independent text-size settings, optional AI assistance, and an in-app guide with 28 workflow topics.
Downloads and installation
Choose the installer that matches your operating system from Assets below:
| Platform | Downloads |
|---|---|
| Linux x64 | AppImage, Debian/Ubuntu .deb, Fedora/RHEL .rpm, and Arch .pkg.tar.zst |
| Windows x64 | NSIS setup .exe |
| macOS Intel and Apple silicon | Universal .dmg and .zip |
Git must be installed and available on your system. Existing SSH keys and Git credential helpers continue to handle Git authentication. Git LFS requires a separate Git LFS installation; stacked restacks require Git 2.38+ and sparse checkout editing requires Git 2.37+.
macOS builds are unsigned and not notarized. Install only from this repository's release assets and use macOS Privacy & Security approval if Gatekeeper blocks the app. macOS upgrades remain manual downloads from the release page.
On supported Linux packages and Windows, Settings → About → Software updates provides update checks, explicit downloads, and an explicit restart/install action. Native Linux package installation may request system authorization. The .yml and .blockmap assets are updater files; download an installer to install the app.
Validation
This release passed Linux, macOS, and Windows CI, with 2,218 automated tests, 39 feature checks, and 100% statements, branches, functions, and lines across all 111 executable source files under the configured coverage gate. These checks do not replace native installer and operating-system permission testing.
