@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 04:11

Git Workbench v1.4.0 makes Git history easier to explore and gives you a persistent place to practice Git workflows.

Highlights

  • History time machine: replay a branch’s commits in order, watch the graph grow, and inspect the files and diffs at each point in history.

Git Workbench v1.3.0 — Guided Setup & Reliable AI Settings

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Oct 04:40

Git Workbench v1.3.0 introduces a guided first launch and fixes AI API-key persistence across app updates.

Highlights

  • A guided first launch: set up your commit profile, preview your Gravatar from your email, choose a theme with a live preview, and optionally configure an AI provider. Finish or skip setup to open Explore Git Workbench. Existing installations keep their preferences.
  • AI settings that stay saved: API keys now use encrypted storage in the app data directory, separate from interface preferences. Blank key fields keep the saved key, switching providers preserves other keys, and a saved-key indicator makes the status clear. Existing keys still available in older preferences are imported before that copy is cleared; a locked keyring offers a retry without discarding the key.
  • Optional AI, clearer controls: use offline commit drafts, Ollama, or a hosted provider. Setup and Settings share Save, Save & test, and explicit key-removal controls. Connection tests use a built-in example rather than repository content.
  • A reliable commit identity: app commits use the selected profile for both author and committer, even without a global Git identity. Changing global Git configuration remains an explicit choice.
  • A responsive setup screen: keyboard navigation, theme-aware controls, scrollable forms, and visible navigation actions work in compact windows.

Downloads and installation

Choose the installer for your operating system from Assets below:

Platform Downloads
Linux x64 AppImage, Debian/Ubuntu .deb, Fedora/RHEL .rpm, and Arch .pkg.tar.zst
Windows x64 NSIS setup .exe
macOS Intel and Apple silicon Universal .dmg and .zip

Git must be installed and available on your system. Existing SSH keys and Git credential helpers continue to handle Git authentication. The Windows interactive terminal requires Windows 10 version 1809 or newer.

macOS builds are unsigned and not notarized. macOS updates remain manual downloads from this release page. Supported Linux packages and Windows provide explicit download and restart/install controls through the update prompt, status bar, or Settings → About → Software updates. Native Linux package installation may request system authorization. The .yml and .blockmap assets support the updater; choose an installer to install the app.

Upgrading

A key already lost before this fix cannot be recovered. Enter it once in Settings → AI Assistant and choose Save AI settings. After saving, an empty password field means the encrypted key is retained. Secure storage requires an available OS keychain/keyring; Linux setups without one show a useful error instead of saving keys as plaintext.

Validation

The automated suite passed 2,576 tests, with 100% statements, branches, functions, and lines across all 129 executable source files under the configured coverage gate. All 39 standalone feature checks passed. The release workflow verified interactive shells inside Electron on Linux, Windows, and macOS and generated matching installers and updater metadata. Source coverage does not replace native installer, keychain, and operating-system permission testing.

Git Workbench v1.2.0 — A Cleaner Workspace & Interactive Terminal

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Oct 07:26

Git Workbench v1.2.0 brings a more compact Home workspace, a persistent interactive terminal, and clearer update notifications.

Highlights

  • A redesigned Home: scan pinned repositories in aligned rows with branch, working-tree, and sync information. Consistent typography, smaller controls, and a compact Recent / Quick access sidebar make better use of your screen. Search, filters, pinning, and expandable request details remain available.
  • An interactive terminal: use a persistent login shell on Linux/macOS or PowerShell on Windows. Working directories, environment variables, command history, Tab completion, ANSI colors, interactive prompts, and Ctrl+C work directly at the prompt. Each repository has its own session; hiding the drawer keeps it running. Resize, maximize, copy/paste, or explicitly stop and restart a session.
  • Updates when you’re ready: installed builds check at startup and offer Download or Skip for now when an update is available. The status bar keeps the update action visible, shows download progress, and offers an explicit restart/install action. Offline and up-to-date startup results stay quiet.
  • Independent text sizing: Home keeps a consistent text hierarchy, and terminal text follows Diff & Code preferences. Layouts adapt to narrow windows and larger Home text.

Downloads and installation

Choose the installer for your operating system from Assets below:

Platform Downloads
Linux x64 AppImage, Debian/Ubuntu .deb, Fedora/RHEL .rpm, and Arch .pkg.tar.zst
Windows x64 NSIS setup .exe

Git must be installed and available on your system. Existing SSH keys and Git credential helpers continue to handle Git authentication. The Windows interactive terminal requires Windows 10 version 1809 or newer.

macOS builds are unsigned and not notarized. Install from this repository’s release assets and use macOS Privacy & Security approval if Gatekeeper blocks the app. macOS updates remain manual downloads.

Supported Linux packages and Windows provide explicit download and restart/install controls through the update prompt, status bar, or Settings → About → Software updates. Native Linux package installation may request system authorization. The .yml and .blockmap assets support the updater; choose an installer to install the app.

Validation

The automated suite passed 2,503 tests, with 100% statements, branches, functions, and lines across all 124 executable source files under the configured coverage gate. All 39 standalone feature checks passed. The release workflow verified interactive shells inside Electron on Linux, Windows, and macOS, and generated matching installers and updater metadata. Source coverage does not replace native installer and operating-system permission testing.

Git Workbench v1.1.0 — Safer History & Expanded Hosting

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 20 Oct 08:18

Git Workbench v1.1.0 expands hosted repository collaboration, adds safer AI-assisted history workflows, and makes everyday commit editing smoother.

Highlights

  • More hosting providers: Browse and work with pull requests or merge requests on GitHub, GitLab.com, self-hosted GitLab, Bitbucket Cloud, and Gitea. GitLab instances keep their own connection settings, including HTTPS ports and base paths.
  • Provider-aware request navigation: Requests have a dedicated sidebar view and use the host’s terminology. Review workspaces include provider context, conversations, approvals, and CI information where the host supports them.
  • Safer AI-assisted history tools: Explain branch changes and draft rewritten commit messages for review. Applying a draft requires confirmation and a restore point; file trees and author metadata are preserved, and changes are not pushed automatically.
  • Smoother commit editing: Click staged or unstaged file rows to inspect their diffs. Drag the top edge of the commit editor to resize it, or use the arrow keys when the resize handle is focused.
  • More readable guidance: Home and in-app guide typography follow the app’s text-size settings more consistently.

Git LFS requires a separate Git LFS installation. Existing SSH keys and Git credential helpers continue to handle Git authentication.

macOS builds are unsigned and not notarized. Install only from this repository’s release assets and use macOS Privacy & Security approval if Gatekeeper blocks the app. macOS upgrades remain manual downloads from this release page.

On supported Linux packages and Windows, Settings → About → Software updates provides update checks, explicit downloads, and an explicit restart/install action. Native Linux package installation may request system authorization. The .yml and .blockmap assets support the updater; download an installer to install the app.

Validation

The automated suite passed 2,455 tests, with 100% statements, branches, functions, and lines across all 120 executable source files under the configured coverage gate. The release workflow generated Linux, Windows, and macOS installers and matching updater metadata. These checks do not replace native installer and operating-system permission testing.
