What's new

  • Spanish. Every app (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and Android TV) is now in English and Spanish
and follows your system language, with nothing to set. On Android 13+ you can also choose the language
for OpenCleaner alone in the system settings.
  • Fits better: the disk map legend wraps instead of being cut off on narrow phones, the macOS Disk
usage toolbar no longer cuts off its buttons, and the Windows classic version's "Sort" and "Show"
    labels are no longer clipped.
  • Intel Macs: the Mac app is now one download for Apple silicon and Intel.
  • New website with install guides and a short video for each system, in English and Spanish:
    https://haguilar91.github.io/OpenCleaner/
  • Built in the open: every file in this release is built and tested on GitHub Actions from the
    source in this repository.

Good to know

  • The Windows installers are not code-signed, so SmartScreen shows "Unknown publisher": click More
    info
, then Run anyway. The macOS app is not notarized: the first time, right-click it and choose
    Open.
  • The update check is a single request to api.github.com when the app starts; nothing about you or
    your files is sent.

    https://haguilar91.github.io/OpenCleaner/?lang=es

OpenCleaner 1.3

Thanks for the feedback on 1.2. This release adds what you asked for, plus updates from inside the app.

Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV (Android 9+, Fire OS 7+) OpenCleaner-1.3-androidtv.apk New: works with the remote

What's new

  • Delete several files at once. Tick files and folders in Disk usage and delete them together.
A bar at the bottom shows how many are selected and how much space they take.
  • Delete from the disk map. Right-click a block (long-press on Android) to select it; selected
blocks get a white outline. The map and the list share the same selection.
  • Trash or permanent. A new setting in Disk usage: Move to Trash (the default, so you can
undo) or Delete permanently. The confirmation always says which one will happen. Android has no
trash for files, so deletes there are always permanent and say so.
  • Uninstall apps that need administrator rights, like Microsoft Office. On Windows the uninstaller
runs through the UAC prompt, and OpenCleaner waits until the program is really gone before cleaning
its leftovers. On macOS, apps that belong to the system ask for your administrator password.
  • New: OpenCleaner for TV. A separate app for Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV (including older
Fire TV on Fire OS 7). Everything works with the remote: a menu on the left, a clear highlight on
what is selected, and OK on a map block opens a small menu to open, select or delete it. Many TVs
have no settings page for "All files access" or "Usage access"; the app then shows the one adb
    command that grants it.
  • Updates from inside the app. OpenCleaner checks GitHub for a newer release when it starts and has
a "Check for updates" button. Updates are checked against the release checksums before they are
    installed.

Good to know

  • Update by hand to 1.3 once. 1.2 has no updater. From 1.3 on, OpenCleaner updates itself.
  • The update check is a single request to api.github.com when the app starts; nothing about you or
    your files is sent.
  • Uninstalling still deletes permanently, after a review and a warning.
  • The Windows installers are not code-signed, so SmartScreen shows "Unknown publisher": click More
    info
, then Run anyway. The macOS app is not notarized: the first time, right-click it and choose
    Open.
  • The Linux single-file builds use your system's display libraries (Wayland, X11, OpenGL), which every
    desktop already has.

OpenCleaner 1.2

Open-source disk cleaner for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android: scan, review sizes, tick, confirm,
clean. Nothing is deleted until you tick it and confirm.

Android 11+ OpenCleaner-1.2-android.apk Allow "Install unknown apps" for your file manager

Checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt.

What's new

  • New look. New OpenCleaner icon (a silver drive with a blue sweep), brand colors on every
platform, and the Ubuntu font on Android (and on Linux when it is installed).
  • Preview before you delete. Click a file in Disk usage to see it first: images, the start of
text files, size, date and location, with Open and Delete. In Clean, the eye button (Review)
lists the files inside an item so you can check them before ticking it.
  • Built-in player for mp4, mp3, flac and other video and audio (macOS, Android, Linux, Windows
    WinUI).
  • Disk map. A WinDirStat-style map of the current folder: colored blocks sized by space, by file
type. Click a folder to go in, click a file to preview it.
  • Sort and Top N. Sort by biggest, oldest, newest or file type, and show only the top 5, 10, 50
or 100. A percentage shows while sizes are being measured.
  • Apps page. Installed apps with their size and when they were last used, sortable by size,
least or most recently used, or name, with the same Top choices.
  • Uninstall with leftovers (Windows, macOS, Linux). Removes the app and shows its leftover files
first (caches, preferences, settings) so you choose what goes. Folders that may hold your data
start unticked. Uninstalling deletes permanently: nothing goes to the Trash or Recycle Bin.
On Android it opens the system's own uninstall prompt.
  • Linux: works on more distros. Detects the distro and uses its package manager: Arch, CachyOS,
Omarchy and Arch Linux ARM (pacman); Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Raspberry Pi OS (APT, plus old
Snap revisions); Fedora and Rocky Linux (DNF); Bazzite and other image-based systems (system
packages left alone, Flatpak only). Runs on GTK 4.8 / libadwaita 1.2 and newer, so Debian 12 and
    Raspberry Pi OS work too.
  • Windows installer. A normal setup program (per-user, no admin prompt), with Start menu entry,
optional desktop shortcut and uninstaller, for x64, ARM64 and 32-bit.
  • Linux single-file builds for x86_64 and ARM64, no installation needed.

Good to know

  • The Windows installers are not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen shows "Unknown publisher".
Click More info, then Run anyway.
  • The macOS app is not notarized. The first time, right-click it, choose Open, then confirm.
  • The Android APK is debug-signed. It installs over earlier OpenCleaner test builds.
  • The Linux single-file builds use your system's display libraries (Wayland, X11, OpenGL), which every
desktop already has. If video does not play in the single-file build, running from source
    (python3 opencleaner.py) uses your system's GStreamer.
  • "Last used" is exact on macOS (Spotlight) and Android (usage access), and approximate on Linux
(the program file's access time) and Windows (Explorer's launch history).
  • The Windows features added in this release (preview, map, sort, Apps page, uninstall) are the least
tested part of 1.2. Please report anything odd.

Safety

Every clean and uninstall shows what it will remove and waits for your confirmation. Each item can
only delete inside its own folders; anything else is refused. Files in use are skipped, never forced.

@Haguilar91 Haguilar91 released this 09 Oct 07:09

First release of OpenCleaner: open-source disk cleaners for Linux, macOS, Windows and Android. Each one scans, shows what it found with sizes, and deletes only what you tick and confirm. Every category always shows a row ("Clean" when there is nothing to remove), and a disk-usage browser helps you find what is really taking space.

What it cleans

  • Linux: pacman cache and orphans, systemd journal, unused Flatpak runtimes, browser crash-recovery backups, large ~/.cache folders, Trash, leftover Steam Proton prefixes.
  • macOS: Homebrew, logs, app caches, Trash, Xcode data, simulators, iOS backups, Steam.
  • Windows: temp folders, Windows Update cache, crash dumps, Recycle Bin, browser caches, developer caches, Steam.
  • Android: own cache, thumbnails, old APKs, WhatsApp sent copies, large files, and per-app sizes (Android does not let apps clear other apps' caches without root).

Safety

  • Nothing is deleted until you tick items and confirm in a dialog that lists them.
  • Each item can only delete inside its own allowed folders. Files in use are skipped, never forced.
  • Risky items (save-game data, device backups, orphaned packages, Trash/Recycle Bin, browser caches that may be open) start unticked.
  • The disk-usage views only move things to the Trash / Recycle Bin. Android has no trash for files, so deletes there are permanent and the app says so.

Good to know

  • The binaries are unsigned. macOS Gatekeeper, Windows SmartScreen and Android will warn on first run. If macOS says the app is damaged after download, run xattr -cr OpenCleaner.app.
  • The Android APK is debug-signed; the Linux binary needs a glibc at least as new as the machine that built it.
  • Use at your own risk and read each confirmation list before cleaning.
