Cocoon 3.11

New

  • New Columns per Page option in Edit Folder for manual folders
  • Your Steam profile picture now shows in the status bar when you're signed in to Steam
  • Enhanced device access now works on Retroid devices running Android 13, like the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro
  • Cocoon now fully works on multi-user Android setups, where previously RetroArch would crash and themes wouldn't load
  • Manually created smart folders now get their default name, color and icon set automatically
  • Silk is now dressed up for halloween!
  • Added Halloween icons to the icon pickers (bat, pumpkin, jack o' lantern, skull, witch hat, lollipop and candy)
  • Revised status bar icons after feedback
  • Critters now have a white stroke for better readibility
  • New Conversations toggle in Integrations, so you can keep notification access without the friends pill

Improvements and fixes

  • Fixed Cocoon crashing with very large libraries! (Tested up to 100k ROMs)
  • Majorly improved Cocoon RAM usage with very large libraries (70% reduction for games stored in RAM)
  • Fixed Now Playing closing for a few seconds when you launch a game after turning off Enhanced device access
  • Fixed adding a widget failing with scrolling navigation on when the highlighted slot was on the next page
  • Fixed X swapping screens on a running app in the dock instead of closing it
  • Fixed Discord status disappearing after 20 minutes of playing
  • Fixed RetroArch freezing on a black screen when Cocoon is installed on an SD card used as internal storage
  • Fixed Close and launch failing with "Failed requirement" when a player like DroidDeck was left running in the background
  • Changes now show much faster in large libraries
  • Fixed scanning getting stuck on a broken .gdi, .cue or .m3u file
  • Fixed force quitting a slow-closing emulator like Dolphin failing
  • Fixed apps with alternative icons or TV-only apps not working with Enhanced Device Access (like KartPad)
  • Fixed editing the grid, adding pages or removing widgets failing after updating from 3.07
  • Changes you make while games are scraping in the background now show straight away, like moving tiles, new art and favourites
  • Fixed edits taking up to 20 seconds to save while games were scraping
  • Genre smart folders now list each genre on its own, with all Scraping source standards
  • Fixed the startup splash never playing for some people after Cocoon had been closed to free memory
  • Fixed restoring a backup made before February on a library that already uses the new platform names

Platform update:
Added Ruffle support for flash
Fixed DuckStation

Also important: We have decided to drop future support for DuckStation beta and when the new launching changes (which would have to be hardcoded each time and does not use android file paths) comes into their main release. It was not an easy decision for us to make, however, the developer has stated that they do not care for frontends or wish to support frontends and so we will comply with this. Duckstation will still work for now, but the Beta won't right now, and when the Beta becomes the main release it will no longer work. Once that happens, do not ask for help with launching DuckStation here and instead raise it as an issue with the developers.

Read more about it here

NOTE: There are a few big changes to be aware of. First of all, per-zoom layouts have been removed. On startup, Cocoon will ask which layout you want to keep for home and your manual folders. You can still zoom between layouts, but only one will be editable now.

Also, if you update via an APK, Cocoon will ask to Optimise itself. This will reinstall Cocoon with its baseline profile to compile the most used code ahead of time to avoid stutters (if you choose not to, Android will do this while it's night, idle and charging, so it's recommended to Optimise if asked).

Cocoon also has a new in-app updater which will do this for you when it updates, so we recommend using the new auto-updater rather than Obtanium to skip the optimisation step each update.

Cocoon 3.07

Library and Log

  • Hide apps directly from the App Drawer context menu, and bring them back through Hidden Games in Settings
  • Press Y or long-press a pod in the Pods menu to launch it, edit it or add it to Home
  • Apps and shortcuts assigned to a console now use its icon overlay, matching the rest of that platform's games (@Schnuzz #432)
  • New game and platform notifications stay on screen longer, making them easier to catch
  • Edit and delete play sessions directly from Log with Y or a long press on a game, including games you've removed (@Vicentegz00 #381, @orangeluigi #421)
  • Log now has Settings, with a hold-to-confirm option to clear your recorded sessions and playtime

Artwork and interface

  • Added a matching default wallpaper for the OLED theme, without changing your chosen wallpaper
  • Game logos stay centered and consistently sized in Info mode, regardless of their hero artwork placement (@dmn002 #428)
  • Artwork save failures now explain what went wrong and keep your selections available to retry, instead of silently appearing to succeed
  • Oversized static artwork is now resized automatically when downloaded/imported instead of failing
  • Pod artwork now uses a Reset icon and correctly restores the default icon, hero or logo (@ephoton #398)
  • Fixed the walking Grub looking squashed or cut off in loading dialogs
  • Fixed Settings sidebar descriptions cutting off the bottoms of letters
  • Logo size sliders now move in consistent 1% steps for finer control
  • The media picker now follows your artwork source order and hides sources disabled in Scrape Settings
  • The app drawer now fits more rows on wide screens instead of stretching its icons too large
  • The Now Playing dock now has the same bottom spacing as Home
  • Games without a logo now have animated icon-and-title previews, including smooth transitions into Info
  • Android apps now show “Android App” instead of the internal platform ID in game information
  • Fixed context-menu game icons shrinking out of alignment with their shadows at some grid sizes
  • Flat icons now stay white on coloured Glance Bar pills and quick-setting buttons, including in the light theme
  • The status bar now uses the correct no-internet icon when disconnected

Playtime and backups

  • Improved sleep and playtime tracking reliability, including resuming after wake when Cocoon is covered by other apps
  • Fixed ended sessions returning after a restart and being counted twice after pausing and resuming a game (@fyodormeteor #388)
  • Prevented the same screenshot appearing twice in Picnic when a session is recovered (@fyodormeteor #388)
  • Improved detection of when you leave a game in single-screen mode
  • Removed games no longer block Play History backups, and their sessions can be restored without reimporting the games (@revangale #431)
  • Removed games keep their artwork in Log (@kuusou #423)
  • Play History backups now include artwork, so it carries over when restoring on another device

System and social

  • The social panel now enables with Steam Friends or Android conversations, without needing Discord, and no longer opens invisibly and blocks controls
  • Battery percentage now stays visible while charging, even when normally hidden
  • Improved battery percentage and charging indicators after sleep and in Now Playing
  • Improved Discord Rich Presence reliability when switching games, toggling it on or off, and waking the device
  • Cocoon no longer shows a crash notification when Android closes it to free up memory

Cocoon 3.0.6

New

  • Added Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox controller icon styles, plus an input correction option for handhelds whose system button mapping does not match their printed A/B/X/Y controls

Improvements and fixes

  • Glass no longer changes text colour - but rather adjusts the tint of the glass surfaces based on readability
  • Fixed an issue where a display change could trigger Cocoon's external screen to reopen (PULSE changing refresh rate / screen resolution, app going into portrait mode, etc)
  • Discord Rich Presence now clears much more reliably when a game ends, Rich Presence is disabled or Cocoon is removed from Recent Apps
NOTE:he No-Auth RPC for Android is new to Discord (last month) and it seems we're the first to actually use it (lmao). If for any reason Cocoon crashes, Discord crashes, the device turns off abruptly, etc - the client can no longer tear down the rich presence and for some reason they opted for a 20 minute internal timeout. I have raised my frustrations with the Staff Developer Advocate @ Discord and he has agreed that it needs to be improved and has passed the feedback on. Bare with us! 🙂
  • Custom theme selections no longer reset after restarting the device when theme storage is temporarily unavailable during startup
  • Returning to Cocoon on the external display after using another app no longer leaves subsequent app and game launches unresponsive
  • Smart folders continue showing their games when Android rebuilds Cocoon on one display while leaving the external display running
  • Pod launches, Add Games imports and game-switch tracking now finish safely if Android rebuilds the Cocoon display that started them
  • The dock selection highlight now stays aligned when closing the app drawer and swapping screens

Cocoon 3.0.5

Highlights

HUGE DISCORD CHANGES. PLEASE READ

  • Removed Discord Social features (friends, etc) to prepare for Hive (read #announcements for more information)
  • Cocoon can still show Rich Presence and no longer requires any authorisation at all!! As long as you have Discord installed and logged in on your device, it will just work! No more annoying popups, sign ins or permissions. (there is still a toggle under Integrations to disable Rich Presence, but it now no longer requires any sign in to enable)
  • Discord Rich Presence now shows the current game as its title instead of "Cocoon"
  • Discord Rich Presence shows a Game Information button to other users (doesn't show for yourself for some reason so dw if you don't see it), taking them to the currently played game's IGDB page
  • Discord Rich Presence now stays connected reliably while playing in single-screen mode

OTHERS

  • Cocoon can now watch your ROM folders for new games without constantly rescanning your library
  • New games and supported platform folders are grouped into one notification where you can review everything found and choose what to import
  • Jingles can now be scraped whenever a jingle repository is configured
  • Added a Random smart folder
  • Added a Random Game widget
  • Added an Emulators smart folder, keeping emulator apps out of Android Games
  • Android apps can now be edited from Home, folders, the App Drawer and dock, with per-app screen, game, playtime and platform preferences
  • Added full support for Wii U games stored in Loadiine folders, importing each title as one game with its folder name

  • First-time setup now lets you choose an installed default player for every platform found during ROM import
  • Imported Android shortcuts now let you choose a platform and whether to add them to Home before saving
  • Auto session tracking now saves a session after 10 seconds instead of 30 seconds

Controls and interface

  • Game context menus now include Hide and Favorite actions
  • Y now jumps directly to Edit, while RB quickly toggles Favorite
  • Android apps now include App Info in their Y menu on Home
  • Select can now toggle and cycle the expanded game info view in single-screen mode, just like X
  • Smart folder creation, editing, genre, regex and platform selection now use Cocoon's consistent 3.0 dialog design
  • The Add Platform dialog in Library & Data settings now uses Cocoon's 3.0 dialog design
  • Dock Style settings previews now show icons from the selected icon pack

Platforms and integrations

  • Signing into RetroAchievements now automatically matches supported imported games with their achievement IDs without replacing manual choices
  • Pokémon Mini games can now be matched with RetroAchievements
  • Android Games is now a built-in scraping platform, using Android-specific IGDB and LaunchBox matches plus SteamGridDB artwork
(Because automatic Android matches can vary, use Scrape Game in Edit Game or the media picker instead of automatic Scrape settings)
  • Screenshots and videos can now be selected independently when scraping games
  • Windows platform settings now show one shared Play time tracking option below all player choices
  • PictoVerse integration has been temporarily disabled

  • Cocoon no longer creates repeated numbered copies of its data folders when folder capitalisation differs or services initialise together
  • Platform downloads and ROM scans now play the loading and completion sounds during first-time setup (regression from 3.0)

Beta 3.04

@inssekt inssekt released this 17 Aug 16:48

Cocoon 3.0.4

Improvements and fixes

  • Returning to Cocoon through Home or Recent Apps during dual-screen play no longer replays the startup splash or loading screen
  • Game tracking now keeps a game active while it remains visible on one screen, even when Cocoon or another app is being used on the other display. It is overall a lot more reliable, especially on some emulators that had problems like Dolphin
  • Backup restores now recover every usable section instead of one stale game, screenshot, setting or layout row blocking the entire backup
  • Restored game information and Play History now reconnect safely after a rescan, while unmatched games remain available for a later scan
  • Backup, theme and music-pack messages now clearly explain what needs attention, and missing optional theme assets no longer block everything else from applying
  • Cocoon Out of Memory crashes are now more smooth and consistent to not flash as much and recover properly
  • Fixed themes not loading on startup or post-crash

Beta 3.03

@inssekt inssekt released this 16 Aug 00:58

Cocoon 3.0.3

Improvements and fixes

  • App launch display preferences are now respected whenever no game is actively in the foreground
  • Cocoon now restores custom themes after a low-memory restart without showing the device-start loading screen when returning from a game
  • OOM Crashes from high RAM pressure now makes Cocoon reopen as pitch black until it can successfully recover - resulting in a much less jarring experience when playing Switch/Windows games
  • Large library scrapes no longer risk crashing when using media-heavy themes
  • Added optional Cocoon diagnostic log capture with direct text-file export for support (Settings -> System & Advance). Do not enable this for no reason as it writes every log to your device, resulting in performance loss.
  • Fixed list-view folders freezing or heavily lagging while loading themed game icons
  • Faster startup if not after a device restart

Cocoon 3.0.1

A few hot fixes are in order, so the APK is removed for now. 3.02 will come tomorrow, sorry for the delay

As always, please make a backup before updating

New features

  • Pin apps from the Y menu to a new section at the top of the app drawer. Docked apps appear there automatically without app drawer pins changing the dock
  • Added an Android Games smart folder that automatically finds installed games, excludes non-game apps and supports Hide Game
  • Added an option to change the default games folder used when Cocoon automatically finds folders for newly added platforms (this will be expanded soon to allow full migration to a new ROM folder, for example, when you transfer your entire ROMs folder from one storage to another)
  • Added subtle animated wallpapers for Cocoon's built-in Light, Dark and OLED themes
  • Added an option in System & Advance to skip Cocoon's animated startup splash
  • Added unsaved-changes warnings to settings and menus that require confirmation

Navigation, touch and displays

  • Made Home page swiping more reliable and added touch support to the page arrows
  • Added touch controls across Music, Last Played, Playtime, Picnic and Now Playing widgets
  • Made Pods fully touch-navigable, including swiping between Single-Screen sections
  • Added touch support to Verbose Session controls, including session icons, page arrows and game tiles
  • Adding a ROM folder now returns controller focus correctly after the Android folder picker
  • Apps now open on the secondary screen by default (or on the screen where Now Playing is (same with app drawer) and can be overridden with a toggle in the Context menu (toggle is also now in App Drawer and they both share the preference)
  • Explicit Top and Bottom launch choices now work properly from the app drawer
  • Added full controller navigation for opening and clearing notifications
  • Notifications cleared in Cocoon or Android now disappear from both
  • Fixed analog and digital controller triggers activating twice from one pull
  • Cocoon no longer changes AYN Thor display focus or keyboard-pinning settings when using Single-Screen mode (fixes auto-lock / home&back setting changes, thx AYN 🙄)

App drawer, folders and grid

  • App drawer searches now remain visible in a dedicated search bar
  • Updated the app drawer to a cleaner five-column layout with wider side margins
  • New platform smart folders use system-inspired colors, while other smart folders follow your accent
  • Folder icon overlays now appear immediately when opening a folder
  • Sorting options now work properly inside smart folders
  • Simplified Single-Screen settings and made all five grid row counts available
  • Removing a tile in page mode now keeps you on the same page and position
  • Removing an Android shortcut now removes only that Home or folder copy; the final copy is clearly labelled Delete Shortcut
  • Game context menus now follow the current grid selection after returning from the app drawer
  • Widgets now use the same sizing and spacing as game and folder tiles
  • Grid resets and organization changes now use each widget's smallest supported size instead of forcing unsupported 1x1 tiles
  • Cocoon now safely repairs stale grid data at startup without rebuilding healthy layouts
  • Built-in platforms no longer show the Delete Platform option, preventing repeated repair warnings

Visual, artwork and audio fixes

  • Refreshed the built-in Pods with new logos, hero artwork, screenshots and descriptions
  • Resized game tiles now reload hero and logo artwork at the resolution they need
  • Glass tiles and shadows now remain visible while swiping by touch
  • Fixed the startup video stretching on non-16:9 screens
  • Fixed the 2x2 Playtime widget graph overlapping its weekly summary and cutting off the minutes label on five-row grids
  • Fixed Cocoon music not starting after a cold launch
  • Animated folder icons and Home screen audio now resume reliably after sleep, animations continue while the dock is focused, and icons no longer flicker when first selected
  • The Corners and Corners (Animated) selection styles now match the shape of resized game tiles
  • Restored the X/Delete action for downloaded themes and assets, with deleted items leaving the list immediately
  • Removed single-screen colour gradient at top of grid

Stability and performance

  • Fixed Single-Screen information freezing or crashing, including Android apps without logo artwork
  • Fixed repeated Flutterkey-related crashes around Home, Settings and Pods
  • Fixed crashes when quickly browsing large or regex-heavy folders
  • Fixed crashes while scraping large libraries
  • Games no longer open with an incompatible player when the selected player does not support their file type
  • Steam integrations now stay connected across sleep and wake
  • Discord & Steam now successfully initialises after boot, showing friend count quickly
  • Improved database updates to reduce stale grids, missing tiles and partial saves when several changes happen at once

Misc

  • Neo Geo platform can now have achievements scraped

  • Added further performance, memory-use and power-drain improvements throughout Cocoon!! Once again pretty huge. A lot of bugs to do with sleep drain and high power drawer have been fixed. Cocoon should be snappier and lighter than ever

A few hot fixes are in order, so the APK is removed for now. 3.02 will come tomorrow, sorry for the delay
