Hotfix

  • Fixed a crash on some devices when rendering Liquid Glass; the app now falls back to compatible glass on affected GPUs.

New

  • New glass. Every glass surface — the tab bar, the mini player, the player's panes and buttons, the sheets — now uses the material of liquid_glass_widgets, the Flutter recreation of Apple's Liquid Glass by Sebastian Degenaar (built on Tim Lehmann's liquid_glass_renderer, both MIT). Its shaders were translated line for line, so the refraction, the tint and the lit edge are the same.
    • It follows your glass settings, translated the way that library translates design parameters: the bend sets how strongly it refracts, the edge depth how thick it is, the frost the blur, the edge light the light.
    • On Android 13 and later; older phones keep the previous glass.
  • Sort menus pour out of their button. In the library and on a playlist, the button's glass detaches and flows into the menu, joined to it by a liquid neck, and flows back into the button when it closes.
  • The tab indicator, and the thumbs of sliders and switches, turn into a clear lens while you press or drag them, and settle back when you let go.
  • Pressed buttons catch the light on the edge nearest your finger.
  • Vietnamese, thanks to @hongducdev (#113).

Fixed

  • Downloaded music would not play with mobile data on but no signal: the app waited on a connection that never answered. Downloads now play at once.
  • The download settings were hidden with YouTube Music as the source, so "Download over Wi‑Fi only" could not be turned off (#153, #155).
  • Cancelling Android's install dialog hid the update until the next release; it is now offered again (#151).
  • A crash on Android 15 when the daily allowance for background downloads ran out (#110).
  • Colour splitting showed on slider and switch thumbs with the setting off (#147).
  • The song under "Add to a playlist" touched the title at large text sizes (#148).

Which APK

  • square-2.8.0-arm64-v8a.apk: almost every phone from the last few years.
  • square-2.8.0-armeabi-v7a.apk: older or entry-level phones with a 32-bit processor.
  • square-2.8.0-universal.apk: works on both, if you are not sure. It is larger.

The update offered inside the app picks the right one by itself.

After installing

Android takes a while to optimise a freshly installed app, and until it does the interface is noticeably slower. To do it straight away, open the app once and give it a few seconds: that is when it hands Android the list of what to compile. Then, with the phone connected:

adb shell cmd package compile -m speed-profile -f dev.lelonio.square

Run before the app has been opened, the command finds nothing to compile and leaves it as it was.
