Online multiplayer arrives in early testing, plus keyboard and mouse controls, draw distance and HUD options.

Multiplayer (early testing)

Important

Multiplayer is new and still in early testing. Connecting and playing a mission work, over the internet too, but expect problems.

  • Online co-op and versus through the game's own Xbox Live menus, using local player profiles and a direct connection to a friend's PC. No Microsoft service, matchmaking or relay is involved.
  • F6 > Online: join codes (Get/Copy, Paste/Join), recent hosts, LAN and virtual-LAN codes, and optional automatic router setup (UPnP) that reports when forwarding fails.
  • Joining again straight after a match works.
  • Player 2's inputs are now sent every frame, and both PCs keep their replay queues short, which cuts some of the delay.
  • Known problems: player 2's own moves still respond late, more so the farther apart the players are. Player 2 should turn off the modern third-person camera (F6 > Camera). Both players need this same version.

Start with ONLINE.txt in the zip. After a session, please report how it went with the zipped logs folder from both PCs: tenchu_startup.log records how long each side waited.

New

  • F6 > Controls: keyboard and mouse play, with remapping.
  • F6 > Camera > Draw distance: separate world and character sliders from 0.25x to 4x, lower for weaker PCs.
  • F6 > Display > HUD: show or hide the HUD and set its opacity.
  • RFD Switchblade > Levels: browse the game's own models and textures and place them in a custom level; enemy types from any mission; named items.
  • F6 > Mods notices a new mod folder while it is open.
  • The Vulkan renderer leaves out OBS's and Wallpaper Engine's capture layers, which could freeze the game while resizing the window.

Install / update

Extract TenchuRFD-0.1.6-alpha-windows.zip somewhere writable and run TenchuRFD.exe. Supply your own supported Tenchu: Return from Darkness original Xbox disc image. The first start unpacks the disc and prepares the game code using the bundled compiler.

For clean testing, use a new folder. Updating an existing installation keeps its hdd saves and personal settings. Keep the bundled EXE and compiler files together; an update may prepare the game code again. No game files, generated game DLL, saves, personal settings or installed mods are included.
