Just realized I posted a comment to the closed 1.20.1 thread (by replying to its digest mails),following up on Kiozens comment there. (Sorry for crossposting).

Why don't you start QMapShack with different configuration files?

That did work during quite intensive use for some time, but since 1.20.2 I ran into problems.
QMS crashes on invoking any other .config file but the last one successfully used, if the workspace wasn't cleared begore closing QMS.

The problem seems to be related to workspace.db and/or its journal; at least creating a fully fresh .../.config/QLandkarte and then using the existing formerly problematic .conf files initially fixes the problem. As does just deleting workspace.db and workspace.db-journal. Until another .conf is used...
This is reproducible.
If I take care to close QMS with an empty workspace, restarting with another .conf works fine.

After rolling back to 1.20.1-1~bpo13+1 from Debians snapshot archives (and pinning that for the time being), everything is back to the former (expected) behavior. GPX workspace items survive .conf changes, DB based items typically get lost if the respective DB isn't available by the other .conf, but no crashes.

Can that be fixed, or do I need to adapt my workflow?

The initial warning is maybe due to a Garmin .fit file used in the last regularly closed session (they seem to cause this often). Sometimes loading a problematic .conf after the above QSql messages also throws references to workplace items of the last working .conf

Maybe due to former tests with that .config and immediate restarts with another.
