Seventh beta, third update, of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.
New since Beta v0.7.2
- Linux / Steam Deck (Proton): fixed the black screen. Proton's own shader compiler could not build the game's shaders, so nothing 3D was drawn. The program now brings Microsoft's shader compiler with it (
d3dcompiler_ms.dll, keep it besideturok_evolution.exe). Not yet confirmed on a Steam Deck: if it still fails there, please sendturok_log.txt - PlayStation controllers work natively: DualSense, DualSense Edge and DualShock 4, over USB or Bluetooth, with rumble, no Steam Input or DS4Windows needed. Cross is A, circle B, square X, triangle Y
- The Switch 2 Pro Controller works natively over USB, with rumble. Close Steam first (Steam takes over the controller's connection). Buttons are placed by position as on an Xbox pad (the bottom one is A); + is Start and − is Back
- An Xbox controller, if one is plugged in, stays controller 1; the other pad takes the next.
RECOMP_HID_PADS=0turns the native PlayStation and Switch 2 support off
You need
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with a Direct3D 11 GPU (or Linux with Proton)
- The Visual C++ 2015-2022 x64 runtime (most PCs already have it)
- Your own copy of Turok: Evolution (USA) for the Xbox, as a disc image or extracted folder. No game data is included.
Running
Unzip everything into one folder. Put your disc image beside turok_evolution.exe (or run it and pick the image or an extracted folder when asked), then run it. The first start extracts the image once into a game folder, which takes a little while. Settings live in turok_settings.ini beside the program; see the README for controls and options. On a Steam Deck, add turok_evolution.exe to Steam as a non-Steam game and force a Proton version in its Compatibility settings.
