@MarkPremier MarkPremier released this 05 Nov 12:32

Seventh beta, sixth update, of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.

New since Beta v0.7.5

  • Mouse steering on the pteranodon: in the flying levels the mouse now steers the pteranodon, the mouse up the screen climbing as it looks up on foot. It adds to the pad and keyboard rather than replacing them. Before, the mouse did nothing while flying
  • Two new rows on the PC Controls page: Flight mouse (on, off) turns the mouse steering on or off, whichever Mouse look is chosen, and Flight speed (1 to 10, 5 by default) sets its sensitivity, apart from Mouse speed. Mouse look and Mouse speed on foot are unchanged

You need

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with a Direct3D 11 GPU (or Linux with Proton)
  • The Visual C++ 2015-2022 x64 runtime (most PCs already have it)
  • Your own copy of Turok: Evolution (USA) for the Xbox, as a disc image or extracted folder. No game data is included.

Running
Unzip everything into one folder (keep d3dcompiler_ms.dll beside turok_evolution.exe). Put your disc image beside turok_evolution.exe (or run it and pick the image or an extracted folder when asked), then run it. The first start extracts the image once into a game folder, which takes a little while. Settings live in turok_settings.ini beside the program; see the README for controls and options. On a Steam Deck, add turok_evolution.exe to Steam as a non-Steam game and force a Proton version in its Compatibility settings.

High frame rates (120 fps and up) are still being tested. If something behaves differently at 120 fps than at 60, please report it.

Seventh beta, fifth update, of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.

New since Beta v0.7.4

  • Sharper shadows in every level: a new Shadow detail row in Video Options (normal, 2x, 4x) draws the shadow map on the GPU at 2048, 4096 or 8192 texels a side. Shadow edges come out much sharper and less blocky, indoors and outdoors. 2x is the default; 4x costs more on weaker GPUs, and normal is the lightest choice for a Steam Deck. It changes immediately, so you can compare while looking at a shadow

@MarkPremier MarkPremier released this 01 Nov 09:31

Seventh beta, fourth update, of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.

Fixed since Beta v0.7.3

  • Chaos in the Skies: the enemy VTOL ships no longer tumble in every direction when they climb to the top of the play area. This only happened above 60 fps
  • The game could lock up when a level was started again (for example quitting to the menu and loading the same level from level select): the level's own data was overwritten with stale graphics data, and the game waited forever on the GPU
  • Flickering blood and decals on surfaces (most visible in the flying levels) are fixed
  • Mouse look moved from Video Options to PC Controls, beside Mouse speed

Seventh beta, third update, of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.

New since Beta v0.7.2

  • Linux / Steam Deck (Proton): fixed the black screen. Proton's own shader compiler could not build the game's shaders, so nothing 3D was drawn. The program now brings Microsoft's shader compiler with it (d3dcompiler_ms.dll, keep it beside turok_evolution.exe). Not yet confirmed on a Steam Deck: if it still fails there, please send turok_log.txt
  • PlayStation controllers work natively: DualSense, DualSense Edge and DualShock 4, over USB or Bluetooth, with rumble, no Steam Input or DS4Windows needed. Cross is A, circle B, square X, triangle Y
  • The Switch 2 Pro Controller works natively over USB, with rumble. Close Steam first (Steam takes over the controller's connection). Buttons are placed by position as on an Xbox pad (the bottom one is A); + is Start and − is Back
  • An Xbox controller, if one is plugged in, stays controller 1; the other pad takes the next. RECOMP_HID_PADS=0 turns the native PlayStation and Switch 2 support off

Running
Unzip everything into one folder. Put your disc image beside turok_evolution.exe (or run it and pick the image or an extracted folder when asked), then run it. @MarkPremier MarkPremier released this 31 Oct 14:55

Fix release for Beta v0.7.1 of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.

Fixed since Beta v0.7.1

  • Linux / Steam Deck (Proton): the program often failed to open. At start-up it sets aside memory for the Xbox at fixed places, and under Proton other memory could already be there, differently from run to run. It now checks that every place it needs is free and moves elsewhere if not. Nothing changes on Windows.

Proton support is new and has not been tested on a Steam Deck yet. If it still fails to start, please send turok_log.txt (written beside turok_evolution.exe) and a Proton log (Launch Options PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, then steam-<number>.log in your home folder), and say which Proton version you used.

Running
Put your disc image beside turok_evolution.exe (or run it and pick the image or an extracted folder when asked), then run it. The first start extracts the image once into a game folder, which takes a little while. Settings live in turok_settings.ini beside the program; see the README for controls and options. Fix release for Beta v0.7 of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.

Fixed since Beta v0.7

  • A sound crash that could happen at any time in a level, most often around the pause menu. DirectSound and the emulated audio interrupt could edit the same list of sounds at once; they now take turns, as they do on the console
  • Menus respond properly to the mouse. Clicks on the top of a menu item or the ends of its text no longer miss, and a click on a highlighted item no longer opens New Game instead
  • Video Options no longer crams its rows together: it shows ten at a time and scrolls, following the highlight as you move up and down, or with the mouse wheel
  • Mouse speed has moved to the PC Controls page (your setting is kept)

You need

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with a Direct3D 11 GPU
  • The Visual C++ 2015-2022 x64 runtime (most PCs already have it)
  • Your own copy of Turok: Evolution (USA) for the Xbox, as a disc image or extracted folder. No game data is included.

Running
Put your disc image beside turok_evolution.exe (or run it and pick the image or an extracted folder when asked), then run it. @MarkPremier MarkPremier released this 31 Oct 02:31

Seventh beta of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.

New since Beta v0.6.2

  • New Video Options setting, Heat haze, for the flamethrower and rocket launcher distortion: original (the Xbox's blocky look, the default), smooth (the ripple is filtered) or sharp (smooth, and the picture behind the haze is drawn at full screen resolution instead of a low-resolution copy)
  • With Keep bodies on, long fights no longer stop new effects from appearing (such as the blood from a severed neck). The game drops effects once too many particles are out, and kept blood, bullet holes and gibs used to fill that up; now the oldest kept ones are removed first to make room. The particle limit is also four times the game's own (RECOMP_PARTICLES changes it)
  • Fixed a crash in the sound code that could happen at any time in a level
  • In the indoor levels (Stealth Entrance, Rescue War Plans and Sleg City), walls in shadow no longer show a straight lit edge beside you, which was most visible in widescreen. Outdoor levels are unchanged
  • Recovered 21 more functions the recompiler had missed (found by a new scan), so code the game reaches only in rare cases is no longer missing

The first start extracts the image once into a game folder, which takes a little while. Settings live in turok_settings.ini beside the program; see the README for controls and options.

Fix release for Beta v0.6.1 of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.

Fixed since Beta v0.6.1

  • The plasma weapon could get stuck in your hands, showing no ammo, with no way to switch away from it. One of the weapon functions had been missed when the game was recompiled; it is now included
  • With that fixed, cycling through all weapons (for example with the All Weapons cheat) reaches the rocket launcher again

@MarkPremier MarkPremier released this 30 Oct 13:20

Fix release for Beta v0.6 of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.

Fixed since Beta v0.6

  • Explosions barely showing, and rocket smoke trails missing in the flying levels, when Keep bodies (formerly Keep decals) was on. Explosion fireballs were wrongly treated as decals and given a ten-minute life
  • Keep bodies now switches itself off in the flying levels (Flight Training, Combat Flight, Escape Flight, Battlefield Flight); your setting still applies everywhere else

@MarkPremier MarkPremier released this 30 Oct 13:02

Sixth beta of the Turok: Evolution (USA, Xbox) static recompilation for Windows.

New since Beta v0.5

  • Fixed another crash in the pteranodon flying level (the audio emulation followed a bad link in its voice list)
  • The audio emulation now checks the values the game hands it before using them, and contains any fault it still hits, so a sound problem costs a moment of sound instead of the game
  • Loading screens keep one size in widescreen instead of changing size a few times, and stay up for at least 3 seconds (RECOMP_LOADING_HOLD_MS changes that; 0 for no hold)
  • Keep bodies and Keep decals are now one option, Keep bodies, which keeps both

Running
