Debugger doesn't stop at breakpoint in a remote interpreter

• VS Code version: 1.20.1
• Extension version (available under the Extensions sidebar): 2018.2.1
• OS and version: Windows 10
• Python version (& distribution if applicable, e.g. Anaconda): 2.7.14
• Type of virtual environment used (N/A | venv | virtualenv | conda | ...): N/A
• Relevant/affected Python packages and their versions: https://pypi.python.org/pypi/azure-iothub-device-client/1.3.0.0b0

Steps to reproduce:

It would be a little more steps to setup IoT Edge on your machine, so I just paste key files here (Let me know if you need other more details):

• Python module code: https://github.com/VSChina/iot-edge-python-docker/blob/master/modules/PythonModule/filter.py

Actual behavior

While when I try to debug a Python module in IoT Edge, I could attach the remote process in Docker, and see the console log in the Debug Console, and the breakpoint is red (which I think it indicates the source map is correct). However, the debugger did not stop at any breakpoint. Try it on both VS Code and VS Code Insider. And my another colleague also could not stop on breakpoint

BTW, sometimes, after wait for a long time, it will stop at while True of the https://github.com/VSChina/iot-edge-python-docker/blob/e817575416449751bd705528b2e024e196d1a52b/modules/PythonModule/filter.py#L132, I am not sure if it is related to time.sleep(1000)?

• Please could you install the development build of the extension from here https://github.com/Microsoft/vscode-python/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md#development-build
• Try testing the https://github.com/DonJayamanne/vscode-python-samples/tree/master/remote-debugging-docker sample once again

@DonJayamanne , just have a summary of issues I meet with for the three kinds of Python code:

When I debug this simple file https://github.com/Azure/edge-module-debug/blob/master/PythonModuleDebug/hello.py, everything is OK.

When debugging https://github.com/DonJayamanne/vscode-python-samples/tree/master/remote-debugging-docker, it is only no highlight. Other things are all OK. So it is not such a blocking issue.

When debugging https://github.com/VSChina/iot-edge-python-docker/blob/master/modules/PythonModule/filter.py, it is a blocking issue. Most things not work except I could see output in Debug console.

Since you are using Windows, please could you try using Python Tools for Visually Studio (this is big VS, not VS Code).

Hi @DonJayamanne , thanks for your suggestion. Actually, we are providing the whole developer experience for IoT Edge developer in VS Code, not VS. We have already supports development and debugging experience for C# developer in IoT Edge. In the next, we want to support Python developer experience for IoT Edge in VS Code since many users are expecting for writing Python for IoT Edge. We will leverage this cool Python extension (include the debugging in Docker) to support our Python developers. Really appreciate your insight and help here! 😃

I understand, I was just trying to check whether debugging works with vs as well. Just wanted to diagnose the issue, I.e. if it works in vs and not in VSC then it's a problem with the extension, else it's an i
issue with ptvsd. I'll check this during the week.

Got it! I have tried to debug in VS (using ptvsd 3.2.1, seems the version need to align with that on my VS).

For https://github.com/DonJayamanne/vscode-python-samples/tree/master/remote-debugging-docker , it is all working on VS

For https://github.com/VSChina/iot-edge-python-docker/blob/master/modules/PythonModule/filter.py , the issues are the same as in VS Code.
