Activating extension 'ms-python.python' fails with: Expected a string, got object.

Environment data

• VS Code version: 1.22.2
• Extension version (available under the Extensions sidebar): 2018.4.0
• OS and version: Ubuntu 16.04.4, 4.4.0-121-generic
• Python version (& distribution if applicable, e.g. Anaconda): 3.6
• Type of virtual environment used (N/A | venv | virtualenv | conda | ...): N/A
• Relevant/affected Python packages and their versions: N/A

Actual behavior

Upon opening a .py file, in the console I see that the
Activating extension 'ms-python.python' failed: Expected a string, got object (see attached log file).
I tried to uninstall and re-install the extension to no avail, and also removed my ~/.vscode directory.
Other ideas are welcome.

1. install vscode, install the python extension.

as a consequence, commands like Python: Select Interpreter fail with 'command not found' and IntelliSense is not working.

Can you update to the latest release of VS Code and also provide your settings.json?

Basically my guess is you have a configuration setting that is set inappropriately and that's triggering the problem. Otherwise I assume everything works fine when the extensions is uninstalled?

Hi Brett, and thanks for your reply. Yes, everything else seemed to be fine.
Upon digging a bit further, the problem got solved by moving (deleting) my ~/.config/Code directory.
I assume that upon updating to a newer version/because of a mistake of mine, as you said an old configuration value was invalid. Hope this helps someone :)
