Activating extension 'ms-python.python' fails with: Expected a string, got object. #1676

Environment data

  • VS Code version: 1.22.2
  • Extension version (available under the Extensions sidebar): 2018.4.0
  • OS and version: Ubuntu 16.04.4, 4.4.0-121-generic
  • Python version (& distribution if applicable, e.g. Anaconda): 3.6
  • Type of virtual environment used (N/A | venv | virtualenv | conda | ...): N/A
  • Relevant/affected Python packages and their versions: N/A

Actual behavior

Upon opening a .py file, in the console I see that the
Activating extension 'ms-python.python' failed: Expected a string, got object (see attached log file).
I tried to uninstall and re-install the extension to no avail, and also removed my ~/.vscode directory.
Other ideas are welcome.

No error

Steps to reproduce:

  1. install vscode, install the python extension.
