I tested vkQuake and I was honestly impressed with what you’ve built. Unfortunately, for competitive play it doesn’t really fit our needs, but I truly enjoyed the project and the quality of the work.
That said, it gave me an idea.
What if QuakeWorld could become truly playable on mobile devices — not as a casual touch-only game, but in a competitive-ready way? Similar to how games like Free Fire work: you can play on a phone, but also connect a keyboard and mouse, use a USB hub, and even output HDMI/DisplayPort to an external monitor. In practice, it would be a “pocket Quake” setup.
With modern phones being extremely powerful, Vulkan support, and proper input handling, this could allow players to run a full QuakeWorld client anywhere, without compromising the core gameplay. The goal wouldn’t be to replace desktop play, but to expand accessibility while keeping competitive integrity intact.
Because of that, I wanted to ask:
do you think there is any possibility of porting ezQuake or uNezQuake to Vulkan? These clients are much more competitive-oriented, and having one of them running on Vulkan could be a huge step toward making this idea viable on mobile platforms.
I know this is not a small task at all, but I believe the concept could open interesting possibilities for QuakeWorld in the long term. I’d really love to hear your thoughts on whether this is technically feasible or completely unrealistic.
Thanks again for the amazing work on vkQuake — it’s genuinely impressive.
