Placeshifter: is there a link to how this is supposed to be installed/activated?

With the new installers and shareware software, how is Placeshifter implemented from an installation and made functional standpoint? I haven't been able to make it work, no surprise there, lol.
Any assistance would be appreciated, thanks.

See "Appendix N: SageTV Placeshifter Client" starting on pg. 289 of the SageTV V7.0 User’s Guide, with the following changes:

1. There's no license required, nor is one requested.
2. I don't think the Locator Service is available any more, so in the SageTV Placeshifter Servers Manager, you'll specify either:
   a) a (local) Host Name or
   b) a (public) DNS name or address of the SageTv Server.

Hi. Can you elaborate on 'sagetv placeshifter servers manager'? Where in Sage setup is that located - can't find that wording - page 290?

Thanks - found this. I guess Placeshifter is a thing that stopped working when Sage went open source, correct, as the Sage servers were killed at that point? I don't see any way to enter a DNS or IP setting, and the 'locator' number seems pre-determined somehow?

Placeshifter works ok without locator ID. I usually run it over my LAN, so I use the internal ip address, but after I looked up my IP address, I added a non-local server in my setup. Steps:

1. click Add or Edit
2. Enter a name
3. Leave locator ID blank
4. Check "connect to this server directly by its hostname or ip address
5. Enter the external IP address in the Address box.

I tested this from my LAN, so it's possible that was steering me wrong, but it's apparently going through the external IP address I gave it. It's not very feasible for me to run an off-site test any time soon.

First time used it will ask for login/password. Then as long as your external IP address doesn't change (hard to predict, of course), you should be good to go.

Placeshifter continues to work. I use it almost daily. The "Placeshifter Servers Manager" window opens when Placeshifter is launched; click the Add button. A new "Add SageTV Server Info" window opens; place a checkmark next to "Connect to this server directly by its hostname or IP address", and fill in the Address box with the DNS or IP value.

Leave the "Locator ID" field empty, since (I understand) the locator service is no longer functioning.

I don't see WHERE to leave the Locator ID blank - it always seems to have a pre-determined number entered, OR where to enter an IP address. My boxes IP address comes up alongside the Port #, but there is no apparent way for me to fill in that info?

Did you try setting up a new connection? You can definitely can leave the Locator ID blank there. I have it blank on all of the connections I've set up (mine are all on my LAN).

Paceshifter continues to work and you should be able to use it remotely with port forwarding or by having a VPN connection back to your LAN. But you will need to know your IP address or use a dynamic dns service like DuckDNS.
