RMBLR 2.6.2

Choose a tag to compare

@Past-da-king Past-da-king released this 16 Oct 18:26

One fix, from an issue opened by @Droyder7.

AI Polish now works with live transcription - #5

With the default engine, Gemini Transcribe Live, Clean & Smooth and the other tones were ignored and you got the raw words back.

The words are already in hand when the stream ends, so the tone is now applied on top with one short text call. A plain tap with no tone still makes no second call.

v2.6.1 — holding the orb works again

Choose a tag to compare

@Past-da-king Past-da-king released this 07 Sep 17:00

Two fixes, both from issues opened by @TheGoodDoctor154 testing on a Galaxy S24. Nothing here changes behaviour if you have the keyboard rule turned off.

Holding the orb no longer makes it disappear — #4

With only show with the keyboard switched on, holding the orb showed the tone arc for a split second and then everything vanished.

Holding the orb hides the keyboard, and the orb was reading that as its cue to leave — pulling the arc out from under the gesture that had just opened it. Being in use now outranks the keyboard rule: while the arc is open, a bubble is up, or a job is running, the orb stays put. This was a regression from 2.6.0, which is where the keyboard rule arrived.

Hold to throw away a recording you did not mean to start — #3

Tap it by accident and there was no way back. The quick double tap only discards inside a fraction of a second of starting; past that the only gesture left was a second tap, which finishes the recording and pastes the silence.

Hold the orb while it is recording and it now stops and discards, with a firmer buzz to say it is gone. Tap still finishes and inserts. The quick double tap still cancels and swaps between dictate and translate.

v2.6.0 — the orb gets out of the way, and turns up when it should

Choose a tag to compare

@Past-da-king Past-da-king released this 04 Sep 15:55

Two halves. The first came out of issue #1 and is all opt-in; the second is issue #2, and it is a straight fix that needs no switch.

The orb can get out of the way — every one of these starts off, so nothing changes until you say so.

  • Fade when idle. Leave it alone and it dims and shrinks back. Touch it and it is instantly solid again. It only fades what you see — the orb stays exactly as easy to hit.
  • A Solid slider, from fully opaque down to barely there, applying all the time rather than only when idle.
  • Only with the keyboard. A switch next to Keep it on screen that makes the orb wait for the keyboard to actually be up, instead of appearing the moment a text box takes the cursor.

All three live under Settings on the home screen → Size and place.

The orb turning up late, or not at all (#2)

  • It appears when the field takes the cursor now, rather than waiting for you to type a character first. RMBLR was asking Android once, at the moment the field was tapped, and Android has frequently not caught up by then. It keeps asking for a moment afterwards.
  • Boxes it used to miss entirely — search bars in launchers, fields inside a web page, apps drawn with Compose — are found. Failing everything else, the keyboard being up is enough on its own.
  • A dictation that could not be written into the field said "Copied" without having copied anything, so the words were gone. They are on the clipboard now.

Nothing here asks for a new permission.

v2.5.3 — a walkthrough you can actually see on OLED black

Choose a tag to compare

@Past-da-king Past-da-king released this 28 Aug 01:51

Every mock inside the walkthrough was filled with the surface colour, and on the OLED theme the surface colour is the background. The text field the orb sits beside was an invisible rectangle with a floating caret in it. The arc of tones was five words hanging in space. The profile rows had no rows.

Each of those now carries a hairline border, so the shape reads on black as well as on a light background. Found by screenshotting the walkthrough on a real phone instead of reading it in the editor.

Everything from v2.5.2 is still here: translating promoted to the first card, chips for the arc languages, one Try it panel, the animated walkthrough with its new translate page, the clipped-tail fix and the orb switch that no longer lies after a process death.

v2.5.2 — translating is the app now

Choose a tag to compare

@Past-da-king Past-da-king released this 27 Aug 21:51

The last release could translate. Nothing about the app admitted it.

Translating moved to the front

  • Translate what you copy is in the first card next to the permissions and keep-it-on-screen, and it warns you when the provider behind it has no key instead of failing silently on your first copy.
  • The languages on the arc are chips now — type, press the plus, tap the cross to remove one. No more editing a textarea of words.
  • The two scattered test boxes are one Try it panel at the bottom holding both the mic and the translation.

The walkthrough

  • A new page for translating, and it no longer pretends Gemini is the only provider it can talk to.
  • It moves: the first page writes the same greeting in six languages one after another, and the gesture page swaps the arc between your tones and your languages the way a double tap does — that gesture was described in words and never shown.
  • Settings can replay it, because a walkthrough seen once is a walkthrough you can never go back to.

Two fixes

  • The last words of a dictation were still being clipped. A completion flag arriving before the closing transcript could settle the session early. Now a transcript has to land after you release the microphone before any completion counts, and the quiet window is wider than the gap a model leaves between its final two chunks.
  • The orb switch read ON after the app was killed while nothing was listening. The preference survives a process death; the service does not. It is reconciled every time the app comes back to the front.

Install the APK below. Android will warn you it is from an unknown source.

RMBLR 2.0.1

@Past-da-king Past-da-king released this 27 Aug 10:57

If you dictate on a Gemini engine, update. Anything said after a pause was being thrown away.

Installs straight over any earlier version — same signing key.

The bug

Pause mid-dictation, carry on, let go — and the second half never arrived.

Two separate faults, and the second only showed itself once the first was fixed.

Gemini's Live API runs its own voice detection and closes a "turn" every time you stop for breath, so generationComplete lands mid-sentence. RMBLR was treating that as the end of the dictation: the flag latched at the pause, and the moment you released the mic it finished with half a transcript while the rest was still on the wire.

With that fixed, the quiet timer — which waits for the transcript to fall silent before settling — was still measuring from the last piece of text rather than from the release. After a long pause that timestamp is already ancient, so "has it been quiet?" passed instantly and it settled sixty milliseconds after you let go. Same lost tail, different route.

Both are fixed, and consecutive sentences no longer run together without a space.

Reproduced against the live API with speech, two and a half seconds of silence, then more speech, streamed in real time — at the pace a microphone actually delivers. Sending the same clip all at once does not trip the server's voice detection the same way, which is exactly why this survived earlier testing.

Dictation now reaches as far as translation

It was fair to point out that the translator had more providers than the thing the app is actually for. Dictation now offers:

Gemini · Groq (Whisper Large v3 Turbo, Whisper Large v3, Distil-Whisper) · Mistral (Voxtral) · OpenAI (GPT-4o Transcribe, GPT-4o Mini Transcribe, Whisper) · OpenRouter · anything OpenAI-compatible, including something self-hosted.

A key belongs to a provider and is entered once — the same Mistral key does your dictating and your translating.

Settings

One page instead of two. Dictation and translation were asking the identical question, so they are two rows on one screen rather than two screens. Pick a provider, its key and its models arrive together in one sheet, and switching provider never disturbs a key you already pasted.

Languages are typed rather than picked from a strip — it is only a name handed to a model, so nothing has to be on anyone's list.

Dictation through Mistral and OpenRouter, and settings pages that stop growing.

Installs straight over any earlier version — same signing key.

Mistral and OpenRouter now do the dictation

Someone here pointed out that both had been wired up for translation while dictation was still Gemini-only, and that dictation was the part they were interested in. Fair.

  • Mistral Voxtral — Mistral's own transcriber, strong across European languages.
  • OpenRouter — one key reaching Voxtral, GPT-4o Transcribe, Whisper and the rest. Name whichever model you want.

Under the hood the Groq-only client became one that takes a base URL, since all three accept an identical request and return an identical shape. The next provider is an entry in an enum rather than another file. Keys are stored per provider, so switching between them no longer asks you to paste the previous one back in.

Settings stopped being a wall

Both pages were built out of stacked option cards. Six engines already filled a phone screen, and the answer to "what if there are a hundred providers" cannot be "then the page is a hundred cards long".

Each page is now three rows telling you what is currently chosen, and each row opens a sheet that slides up from the bottom — where your thumb already is, and without hiding the page you came from. Dictation and translation ask the same shape of question, so they now have the same three rows in the same order.

Only the key belonging to the selected provider is on screen. Leaving the Gemini field visible after picking Mistral, with a second box underneath it, was the most confusing thing on that page.

Type your language

It used to be a horizontal strip of chips, which is fine for the handful of languages whoever built it happens to speak and useless for the next one along — and if yours sat at the end you scrolled to find it.

A language is only a name handed to the model, so now you type it. Write isiZulu, Setswana, anything. A few one-tap suggestions sit underneath. Blank still means work it out.

Streaming dictation stops paying for a spoken reply nobody hears.

Installs straight over any earlier version — same signing key.

A model built for this job

Gemini Transcribe Live (gemini-3.5-transcribe-live) is the new default engine.

It accepts a TEXT response modality and refuses AUDIO — the exact reverse of the speech-to-speech Live model, which refuses TEXT and answers every dictation out loud whether or not anyone is listening. Streaming five seconds of speech at it returns the setup acknowledgement, the transcript, and nothing else: no model turn, no audio parts.

So there is nothing to wait for at the end of a sentence, and no output audio on the bill. It is the fastest option and the cheapest at the same time, which is not a trade that comes up often.

The previous Live model stays, labelled for what it actually does rather than quietly removed. If you chose it, you keep it.

Flash Lite is now 3.5

gemini-3.5-flash-lite replaces 3.1 across the batch transcriber, the tone pass, the fallback chain and translation.

Upgrading

Your engine choice survives. Model ids stored by older versions are mapped forward rather than falling through to the default, so nothing you picked deliberately resets itself.

A redesign, a dictionary, and settings you can actually find your way around.

Installs straight over any earlier version — same signing key.

It looks like an app now

The bottom bar floats: fully rounded, lifted off the edges, and only the selected tab carries its label — the pill springs as it takes the word in. Content runs full height behind it instead of stopping at a strip above it.

Everything tappable answers with the same spring rather than a ripple. Shape opened up throughout, screen titles got their confidence back, and section labels are set in tracked caps. Body text was left alone, because if the paragraph shouts too there is nothing left to emphasise.

This is Material 3 Expressive as a design language. Its named widgets — ButtonGroup, FloatingToolbar, MaterialShapes — are still alpha-only, and pulling an alpha into an app people dictate into every day is not a trade worth making.

A dictionary of your own words

Names, places and jargon get guessed at, and differently every time. Add them once, under History → Dictionary, and they go to whichever engine is running before it hears anything — including on the streaming path. Each word takes an optional spelling for the ones that never come out right.

You will not have to type the list. It suggests itself from what you have already dictated: anything said more than once, or said once with a capital letter, appears as a chip to tap.

Settings in four rooms

It had grown to nine sections on one scroll, so an API key sat directly above a colour picker and neither was findable. Now you pick a subject first:

Models & keys · Translation · Appearance · Typing

Translation's on-switch moved out to the main page, where the rest of the orb's behaviour lives. Turning something on is not the same kind of act as configuring it.

Also

  • The Voice Studio page is gone. Nothing ever navigated to it — the button that claimed to open it went somewhere else — so its Mode and Style controls existed and were unreachable. They are on the main page.
  • The home screen no longer opens by inviting you to test an app you have not finished setting up. Trying it out is last, and small.

The transcript now arrives while you are still speaking, and RMBLR can translate anything you copy.

Installs straight over 1.0.0 — same signing key.

Dictation is live now

On Gemini Live, the socket opens the moment you press the orb and your audio streams up while you talk. By the time you let go the words are already there. Before this, nothing was sent until you stopped, and then the app waited for the model to finish generating a spoken reply it never used — all of that delay landing at exactly the moment you were watching for text.

The trade is stated plainly in the app: a Live model is speech-to-speech and cannot rewrite text, so tone actions are unavailable in that mode.

Pick your engine

Engine What you get Tones
Gemini Flash Lite (default) Cheap and accurate, handles switching languages mid-sentence. Yes
Gemini Live Streams as you speak. Nothing to wait for. No
Groq Whisper Fastest of the three, free to start. It is Whisper — strong in one language, weaker across two. Yes

Flash Lite is the new default. Transcription is not the part that needs a large model.

A plain tap is now one call, not two

Tapping the orb makes no rewriting call at all — the transcript goes straight into the field. Tones only run when you flick to one.

It listens to you, not just to what you dictate

When a tone does run, instructions you speak to it mid-sentence are carried out instead of typed:

"…send it Tuesday, actually make this a bullet list, and mention the invoice."

You get the bullet list. You do not get the words "actually make this a bullet list" in your message.

Translate what you copy

Off until you switch it on. Copy any text and the orb appears wearing a translate glyph. Tap it, and the translation comes back in a bubble you can read or copy. It leaves again a minute later.

The clipboard is read at the moment you tap and at no other time. Android does not allow an app to read the clipboard in the background, and RMBLR does not try to work around that.

Translation runs on Gemini, Mistral, OpenRouter, Groq, OpenAI — or anything that speaks the OpenAI chat-completions API, including a server on your own machine. Base URL and model name are yours to set.

Languages

There is now a language picker, and the hint reaches every engine. Leave it on auto unless you are being transcribed into the wrong language — Gemini handles far more than its documented list, including languages that are not on it at all.

Appearance

OLED black — true #000000, so the pixels switch off. And Material You on Android 12+, taking the palette from your wallpaper. OLED black keeps its black background and borrows only the accent.

Also fixed

  • The theme picker existed in the code but nothing was wired to it, and a preference read is not observable — so light and dark were both unreachable and inert.
  • A 45-second watchdog that could silently truncate a long dictation.
  • The orb and the home screen had drifted apart and each carried a dead code path that could never run.
