From mjtg@cus.cam.ac.uk

Well, your example suggests it's a bit rocky ...

[10:20] ettsn% cat try
#! /usr/bin/perl -w

use strict;

my $x = @ARGV or shift if @ARGV;
my $y = "foo" or shift if @ARGV;
[10:20] ettsn% perl -MO=Deparse,-p try
Found = in conditional, should be == at try line 6.
try syntax OK
[snip warnings]
(@ARGV and ((my($x) = @ARGV) || shift(@ARGV)));
(@ARGV and ((my($y) = 'foo') || shift(@ARGV)));

Hmmm... converting a scalar assignment to a list assignment?

And it gets this wrong in the same way:

  $a = 2; $b = $a**2 x 4;

Cc'd to perlbug. (Failure occurs on both 5.005_03 and 5.005_60.)
