Issue #24 of the SysAdmin Weekly newsletter is out. The theme this week: calibrated skepticism on the AI doom narrative. Some of the doom is real, a lot of it is marketing, and the difference matters when you are trying to read the temperature in your own organization.

• From the Console: The doom narrative has hit saturation. Some of it is warranted, a lot of it is marketing dressed up as inevitability. The full data breakdown is coming on Episode 047 with Eric Siron.
• The Take: AI is doing PR work for layoffs that were really overhiring corrections. Cisco cut 4,000 on the back of strong earnings. Oracle reportedly cutting 30,000. Meta 8,000 more in May while telegraphing $115B+ in 2026 AI capex. The press releases all read the same way: trim headcount, route savings to AI capex, take the investor bump.
• Episode 046: the honest case for Claude Code in SysAdmin workflows, the CLAUDE.md pattern, and three Linux LPE CVEs (Fragnesia, DirtyFrag, CopyFail) that landed in quick succession.
• Tool of the Week: Ollama. Run open-weight models locally on your own hardware. The third option when the choice used to be just hosted-model or no-AI.
• Quick Win: pick one "AI is replacing X" headline this month and trace it back to the primary source. The headline number rarely survives the trip.
