Future Cop: L.A.P.D. (1998) as a native program: the game's own FCopLAPD.exe is recompiled to native code when it starts, and everything it needs from Windows and DirectX is rebuilt in Rust on OpenGL. No game files are included: you need your own copy of the PC version.

New in 0.8.0

The PlayStation look. Three new boxes in Preferences, under the 3DFX Options (all on by default, each can be switched off):

  • Texture Coloring: lit surfaces can become brighter than their texture, up to twice as bright, as on the PlayStation. The PC version's 3D renderer cut the light off at the texture's own brightness, which made everything look flat.
  • PlayStation Colors: the PC version recoloured the textures of the first mission only (darker and yellower than every other mission). They now get the PlayStation's colours back.
  • PlayStation Shading: the 3D renderer shows the picture with the contrast of the game's software renderer, darker in dark places, instead of the brighter 3Dfx gamma.

Advanced Graphics. A new "Advanced Graphics..." button under those boxes opens a dialog with new effects (all off by default; each one applies at once):

  • Ambient Occlusion: corners, edges and places under objects get soft, darker shading.
  • Dynamic Lights: glows, muzzle flashes, explosions and rocket trails light the streets and walls around them. Police lights flash red and blue.
  • Shadows: the sun casts shadows from robots, buildings, ramps and walls, and the strongest dynamic lights cast shadows too. The game's round shadows under objects are left out while this is on.

These effects are new to Future Cop and not part of the original game. They need the 3Dfx renderer.

Downloads

System File
Windows 10/11 (x64) fcop-v0.8.0-windows-x64.zip
Linux (x86-64, OpenGL 3.3) fcop-v0.8.0-linux-x64.tar.gz

Getting started

  1. Unpack the archive.
  2. Put an image of your CD (.iso or .bin) next to fcop.exe / fcop, or copy your game into the game_files folder. That can be the CD's contents, an image of the CD, or your installed game folder.
  3. Start fcop.exe on Windows, or ./fcop from its folder on Linux. It finds the game, checks that it is a supported version (US or German) and keeps only what the game needs.

When you update from an earlier version, keep your game_files folder: your settings, key bindings and saves are in it.
