Effigy 0.3.0
Effigy 0.3.0: much cleaner baked textures, paint a part and redraw it, connect animation clips, more from video, and a first run that no longer needs Git.
What's new
Textures
- Cleaner normal maps (contributed by @rndmbt in #17): no more facets and breaks at UV seams, and the even grain is gone. The model now carries the tangent frame its map was baked in, so viewers and engines read it the same way.
- Smooth shading everywhere and less grainy ambient occlusion (#17). The AO takes a few seconds longer.
- Rebuild it as one solid (#17), a new tick box in Clean, off by default. It closes a torn or hollow simple prop into one piece. It removes fine detail (a face melts) and keeps only the largest part, so leave it off for characters and models in several pieces.
- Paint a part and redraw it (M68): paint on the model, say what it should become, and it is redrawn from every side that sees it. Nothing outside the paint changes.
- Texture detail sees more (M66): up to three extra views where the usual ones see poorly, and no more coloured halos next to inner edges.
Animation
- Connect two clips (M65): Kimodo makes the motion between the end of one clip and the start of another, or continues a clip.
- Everyone in a video, hands on the floor, a panning camera (M64).
- Arms kept out of the body (M67): after an animation is put on a person, the arms open just enough to stop forearms and hands going through the torso. On by default, and you can untick it.
Interface and install
- Each tool has its own block under Tools, Texture detail is split into three tools, and rows no longer wrap.
- The zip's first run no longer needs Git. On a PC without it, earlier zips stopped while installing the skinning environment.
The full list is in CHANGELOG.md.
Known limits
- Not run on a GPU yet: the video features (M64) and painting a part (M68) pass their tests but have not run on a real GPU. Connecting clips, the extra detail views and the arm clearance have run on one character. Checks inside a game engine are still to do.
- Text to motion is compiled on your computer, so its install needs CMake and a C++ compiler. This also affects the Characters with motion and Everything sets in Get started.
- Parallax layers still needs Git to install.
SETUP.md's Troubleshooting covers both installs.
Requirements
- Windows 11.
- NVIDIA: an RTX 40 or 50 series card with 16 GB of VRAM and driver 575 or newer. 12 GB works for the Fast engine, best effort.
- AMD: an RX 9070 or 9070 XT, with the Fast engine only.
- 32 GB of RAM recommended.
- 70 to 160 GB of disk, mostly models. You pick which ones to download.
Install
- Download
Effigy-v0.3.0-win64.zipbelow. - Right-click it → Properties → tick Unblock.
- Unpack it to a short path such as
C:\Effigy. - Double-click
run.bat.
Updating from 0.2.0: unpack the new zip into the same folder and replace files when asked. Your library\, models\, Python and Blender stay, and run.bat installs only what changed. If Setup shows Repair on a feature afterwards, click it.
The step-by-step guide is SETUP.md; every page of the app is explained in MANUAL.md.
Licence: MIT. The Blender scripts in blender_ops/ are GPL-3.0-or-later and run as a separate process. Model licences are listed in licenses.yaml and on the app's Licences page.
