Spindle for Browser 0.1.7

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 03 Nov 00:06

Spindle for Browser 0.1.7, for Chrome, Edge and Brave, built from this tag by the browser release workflow.

What's new in 0.1.7

  • More files open in place. A PDF a thread makes opens in a tab of its own, in your browser's own PDF viewer. Word, Excel and PowerPoint files (and their macro-enabled kinds, whose macros never run) are drawn as pages in the preview with nothing in them running: text, headings, lists, tables, pictures, sheets with their number formats, and slides. Audio and video play, AVIF, BMP, ICO and APNG pictures show, and an SVG written without its namespace now draws.
  • An action you allow is done only on what you were shown. Under Before acting (Auto or Ask), an allowed action goes ahead only on the tab, page, part or dialog the question showed; if the page reloaded or moved on since, nothing is done and the thread is told. A dialog's question quotes what the dialog says.
  • A message that comes back lands in its own thread. Take back, going back to before a message, or a send that failed puts the message in its thread's box, even if you opened another thread meanwhile: it waits for that thread, in any window, and is never lost.
  • Background tasks keep going when you stop a turn. Stop ends the turn's own page actions; a task running in the background goes on until its own Stop.
  • Storage that holds through a crash. The browser's file slots now carry a check and record every rename first, so a crash mid-write never leaves a file under a wrong name; a slot damaged otherwise is kept apart until Settings, Storage, Unreadable frees it.
  • Large threads stay where they fit. A thread file over 1 GB is refused before it is read, and Bring back leaves a thread over 1 GB on your host, saying why (a host built from this source reports a thread's size; an older one is asked as before).

Verify it before you unzip it: sha256sum -c spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip.sha256 (on macOS, shasum -a 256 -c spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip.sha256; on Windows, compare Get-FileHash spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip with the .sha256 file), or gh attestation verify spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip -R SiliconState/Spindle.

Install (Chrome, Edge or Brave, Chromium 116 or later, on desktop):

  1. Download spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip and unzip it into a folder you will keep, one without the version in its name.
  2. Open chrome://extensions (in Edge, edge://extensions; in Brave, brave://extensions), turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and choose that folder.
  3. Pin Spindle, open its panel, and in Settings add a key or Sign in.

Update: unzip the new version over the same folder, replacing its files (Windows' Extract All suggests a new folder named after the zip: change it to the one you loaded; on macOS or Linux, unzip -o spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip -d FOLDER), then click Reload on Spindle's card in the extensions page. Reload stops the turns running in the browser; they show as interrupted, and Continue goes on. The browser derives an unpacked extension's id from its folder's path, so another folder, or this one moved or renamed, is a separate install with its own threads and keys.

This build runs commands in the browser Linux on v86. The faster wasm Linux is in builds made from source with SPINDLE_WASM_LINUX (how).

The zip's THIRD-PARTY.md lists the other software it carries, with licenses and sources.

Spindle for Browser 0.1.6

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Nov 12:02

Spindle for Browser 0.1.6, for Chrome, Edge and Brave, built from this tag by the browser release workflow.

What's new in 0.1.6

A careful review of 0.1.5, with fixes where it fell short of its promises.

  • Nothing you write is lost. A message with files that waits for a turn to end is now kept in the browser's storage: if the browser closes first, it comes back, held, for you to send or take back. So do messages the turn ended before reading, a message whose turn you stopped before it began, and one your host refused. A reply to a thread that cannot take one is refused at once, your draft kept.
  • Before acting asks about the right tab. A question about pressing a key, going back or answering a dialog names the tab, and the action stays on that tab whatever you look at when you answer. Auto now also asks before Return and before icon buttons such as a "Send" arrow; a choice Spindle cannot read asks; a script's question goes away when its command ends. Taking the browser's site access back keeps your Before acting choice.
  • Closing the debugging bar means it. Spindle does nothing more on that tab, choosing, scrolling, moving or closing it included, until you turn page actions off and on.
  • Threads on your host move more surely. A move back no longer gives up while the host is still sending the thread, large threads come back on slow lines, and a move the host cannot take rolls back cleanly. Connect keeps its new token at once, and asks you to unlock your keys first when they are locked.
  • Steadier. The panel no longer shows a finished move as under way after the engine restarts; hosted threads are checked every 15 seconds rather than every second; a page dialog stays answerable while a question about it waits.

Verify it before you unzip it: sha256sum -c spindle-browser-0.1.6.zip.sha256 (on macOS, shasum -a 256 -c spindle-browser-0.1.6.zip.sha256; on Windows, compare Get-FileHash spindle-browser-0.1.6.zip with the .sha256 file), or gh attestation verify spindle-browser-0.1.6.zip -R SiliconState/Spindle.

Install (Chrome, Edge or Brave, Chromium 116 or later, on desktop):

  1. Download spindle-browser-0.1.6.zip and unzip it into a folder you will keep, one without the version in its name.
  2. Open chrome://extensions (in Edge, edge://extensions; in Brave, brave://extensions), turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and choose that folder.
  3. Pin Spindle, open its panel, and in Settings add a key or Sign in.

Update: unzip the new version over the same folder, replacing its files (Windows' Extract All suggests a new folder named after the zip: change it to the one you loaded; on macOS or Linux, unzip -o spindle-browser-0.1.6.zip -d FOLDER), then click Reload on Spindle's card in the extensions page. Reload stops the turns running in the browser; they show as interrupted, and Continue goes on. The browser derives an unpacked extension's id from its folder's path, so another folder, or this one moved or renamed, is a separate install with its own threads and keys.

Spindle for Browser 0.1.5

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Nov 05:33

Spindle for Browser 0.1.5, for Chrome, Edge and Brave, built from this tag by the browser release workflow.

What's new in 0.1.5

  • Run on my host. Connect your Spindle host in Settings with one click (the host's own page asks you to allow it), then move a thread there from its menu: it runs on the host's model sign-in and sandbox, keeps going with Chrome closed, and still uses this browser's page tools while it is open. Bring back to this browser returns it. Moves resume after a crash on either side and never leave two live copies.
  • Before acting. Settings, Pages: Full (the default) acts without asking; Auto asks before anything that sends, submits, pays or deletes; Ask asks before every click, key and page it opens.
  • A site's secret header. A site your scripts may call can carry an API token, sealed with your keys, added only to requests to that address and redacted from whatever comes back. Scripts never see it.
  • Stop, then say what to do. Stopping a running command keeps it as stopped, with what it printed, and it never runs again; your reply goes on with the turn.
  • Clearer failures. A reply that cannot be read now says why. Replies from OpenAI API reasoning models (GPT-6, GPT-5.6) no longer fail at their last event.
  • Models. The ChatGPT list holds only the models ChatGPT serves to a signed-in account; GPT-4.1 and GPT-4o take only the default effort; reasoning off works on GPT-6 Sol and Luna.
  • Dim is the new dark theme, and in Edge, Brave or Opera the panel uses that browser's name.

Install (Chrome, Edge or Brave, Chromium 116 or later, on desktop):

  1. Download spindle-browser-0.1.5.zip and unzip it into a folder you will keep.
  2. Open chrome://extensions (in Edge, edge://extensions; in Brave, brave://extensions), turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and choose that folder.
  3. Pin Spindle, open its panel, and in Settings add a key or Sign in.

Update: unzip the new version over the same folder and click Reload on Spindle's card in the extensions page. The browser names an unpacked extension by its folder, so a different folder is a separate install with its own threads.

This build runs commands in the browser Linux on v86. The faster wasm Linux is in builds made from source with SPINDLE_WASM_LINUX (docs/browser-linux.md).
