Spindle for Browser 0.1.7, for Chrome, Edge and Brave, built from this tag by the browser release workflow.

What's new in 0.1.7

  • More files open in place. A PDF a thread makes opens in a tab of its own, in your browser's own PDF viewer. Word, Excel and PowerPoint files (and their macro-enabled kinds, whose macros never run) are drawn as pages in the preview with nothing in them running: text, headings, lists, tables, pictures, sheets with their number formats, and slides. Audio and video play, AVIF, BMP, ICO and APNG pictures show, and an SVG written without its namespace now draws.
  • An action you allow is done only on what you were shown. Under Before acting (Auto or Ask), an allowed action goes ahead only on the tab, page, part or dialog the question showed; if the page reloaded or moved on since, nothing is done and the thread is told. A dialog's question quotes what the dialog says.
  • A message that comes back lands in its own thread. Take back, going back to before a message, or a send that failed puts the message in its thread's box, even if you opened another thread meanwhile: it waits for that thread, in any window, and is never lost.
  • Background tasks keep going when you stop a turn. Stop ends the turn's own page actions; a task running in the background goes on until its own Stop.
  • Storage that holds through a crash. The browser's file slots now carry a check and record every rename first, so a crash mid-write never leaves a file under a wrong name; a slot damaged otherwise is kept apart until Settings, Storage, Unreadable frees it.
  • Large threads stay where they fit. A thread file over 1 GB is refused before it is read, and Bring back leaves a thread over 1 GB on your host, saying why (a host built from this source reports a thread's size; an older one is asked as before).

Verify it before you unzip it: sha256sum -c spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip.sha256 (on macOS, shasum -a 256 -c spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip.sha256; on Windows, compare Get-FileHash spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip with the .sha256 file), or gh attestation verify spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip -R SiliconState/Spindle.

Install (Chrome, Edge or Brave, Chromium 116 or later, on desktop):

  1. Download spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip and unzip it into a folder you will keep, one without the version in its name.
  2. Open chrome://extensions (in Edge, edge://extensions; in Brave, brave://extensions), turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and choose that folder.
  3. Pin Spindle, open its panel, and in Settings add a key or Sign in.

Update: unzip the new version over the same folder, replacing its files (Windows' Extract All suggests a new folder named after the zip: change it to the one you loaded; on macOS or Linux, unzip -o spindle-browser-0.1.7.zip -d FOLDER), then click Reload on Spindle's card in the extensions page. Reload stops the turns running in the browser; they show as interrupted, and Continue goes on. The browser derives an unpacked extension's id from its folder's path, so another folder, or this one moved or renamed, is a separate install with its own threads and keys.

This build runs commands in the browser Linux on v86. The faster wasm Linux is in builds made from source with SPINDLE_WASM_LINUX (how).

The zip's THIRD-PARTY.md lists the other software it carries, with licenses and sources.
