The blockchain is a powerful tool that allows a system to achieve digital consensus among a distributed and decentralized network. It has been primarily used in digital currencies, such as Bitcoin, as a transaction ledger to keep track of the balances of millions of users.

Storj approaches the use of the blockchain in a different way. We introduce the idea of a metachain or a blockchain that allows over 1kb of metadata in a transaction. This is not meant to be standard files like a picture or a movie, but rather a descriptor of where that data is and what should be done with that data. Storj is working on building and releasing a few metachains this year, but primarily using Datacoin as a proof of concept.
