FAQ
Is the search regex-compatible?
Yes — choose Regex as the match mode. It uses Rust's regex engine (character classes, |, quantifiers, anchors, groups, (?i) flags). Backreferences and look-around aren't supported (a linear-time performance guarantee). See Usage.
How do I search a folder straight from Explorer? Enable it once in ⚙ Settings → Explorer integration, then right-click a folder → Search with InSearch (Windows 11: under Show more options). See Installation.
Which version am I running? Click ℹ About (top-right). It shows the version, plus links to Struis ICT, the source, the license, and a Buy me a coffee link.
Does it search inside PDFs / Word / Excel files?
Yes — pdf, docx, and xls/xlsx/ods are decoded to text and searched. PDF results depend on the PDF containing real text (scanned images have none). See Supported formats.
What's "block" mode? One result per timestamp-to-timestamp log block instead of per line — so a match inside a multi-line stack trace shows the whole block. See Usage.
Can I search a specific date range inside a big log file?
Yes — open ⚑ Filters → Entry time and set a from/to range (date, with optional HH:MM, or use the 📅 calendar). InSearch filters by the timestamp inside each matching line/block, so a multi-day log is sliced down to just the entries in your window. This is different from File date, which filters on the file's last-modified time. See Usage.
Do saved searches remember my filters? Yes. ★ Saved stores the query, options, filters, and folders; loading it restores them all (replacing whatever filters you currently have set). One exception since 0.7.0: a saved search without an excluded-types list picks up your global default list instead of clearing it.
Can I always exclude certain file types, without retyping them? Yes (from 0.7.0). Type them into ⚑ Filters → Type → not these and click Save as default, or set the list under ⚙ Settings → Search defaults. It is pre-filled into every new search; saved searches with their own list override it. See Usage.
How do I keep a whole-drive search out of C:\Windows and Program Files?
Tick Skip system folders on the options row (and Skip hidden for dot-folders and hidden files). Both are remembered. Only the Windows-owned folders directly under a drive root are pruned; a folder you add yourself is always searched. See Usage.
Does InSearch remember my settings and folders? Yes. Your theme, result view (Compact/Detailed), last-used folders, and the window size/position are restored on the next launch — on top of your recent and saved searches. See Usage.
What keyboard shortcuts are there? Ctrl+F focuses the search box, Ctrl+L toggles Live/Watch, and Esc closes an open calendar/dialog popup (or clears the query if none is open). See Usage.
Does InSearch build an index or run in the background? No. Searches run on demand over the folders you pick; there's no daemon and no index to maintain.
Does it send anything over the network? No telemetry, ever — your queries, results, and files never leave your machine. The only optional network feature is the update check below, which is off until you opt in. See Security & privacy.
Does InSearch check for updates?
Only if you let it. On first run it asks once whether to check automatically (off unless you say yes), and you can flip it any time in ℹ About → Automatically check on startup. When on, it just asks github.com over HTTPS whether a newer release exists and, if so, points you at winget upgrade StruisICT.InSearch or the releases page — it never downloads or installs anything. You can also check on demand with ℹ About → Check for updates.
Why are some results capped? The UI holds up to 10,000 matches to stay responsive; refine your query (or use the Filter results box) to narrow down.
Does it work on a virtual machine or a server without a GPU?
Yes (from 0.7.0). On Windows the GUI renders through DirectX 12 and falls back to WARP, Windows' built-in CPU renderer, when there is no GPU — Hyper-V/VMware/cloud VMs, Windows Sandbox, servers on the Basic Display Adapter and RDP sessions without hardware acceleration all work. ℹ About → Renderer shows what is in use. Earlier versions needed OpenGL 2+, which those machines don't provide, so the window never opened. On Linux, Mesa's llvmpipe covers the same case. See Installation.
Can I run it headless / script it?
Use insearch-cli — it prints path:line: text and is pipe-friendly (--version prints the version). See Usage.
