Insanity Engine VR v0.2.0-beta (WIP)
Second public beta. Install notes and controls are in the README; existing players: replace the DLLs and the .bat, keep your ini.
New in v0.2.0-beta
- Your body follows your head: turn in place and Miles turns with you; the view stays on your head through 180° turns, sprinting and vaulting.
- Story interactions (keyboards, levers, valves, pumps, buttons) fire on X within reach, no exact aim needed.
- Realistic camcorder: held in your hand, night vision on its own screen with the light shining through it. A menu switch gives you the game's full-screen camcorder (tap the grip to raise and lower).
- Walk where you look: left stick forward walks where your head faces.
- Vault, mantle and climb keep the view on your head.
- Pause menu and main menu hang in the room instead of on your face.
- New defaults: snap turning, motion-tracked arms on, hand markers off, bloom halved.
- Much smaller log; developer diagnostics are off unless
[Debug] Diagnostics=1.
Known issues
- Controller recenter (L1 double tap) is unreliable; use G on the keyboard.
- Night-vision light can still show partly in your own view; HUD dot off-centre.
- Tested on the Steam version with Meta Quest (Link and Virtual Desktop) only.
InsanityEngineVR-v0.2.0-beta.zip is the player package (9 files). InsanityEngineVR-v0.2.0-beta-source.zip is the GPL-3.0 source for this exact build.
Insanity Engine VR v0.1.1-beta (WIP)
Camcorder night vision now works
Holding the right grip now keeps the camcorder in your hand with night vision. In v0.1.0-beta it could switch to the fullscreen camcorder instead, especially on a fresh install, because the mod stopped looking for the player if the game took longer than ~20 s to reach gameplay. It now keeps looking, and redoes the lookup after every level load.
Work-in-progress beta of Insanity Engine VR, a 6DOF VR mod with motion controls for Outlast (2013).
Download
Get InsanityEngineVR-v0.1.1-beta.zip below. That's the only file you need. The -source.zip is the source code of this exact build, as the GPL-3.0 license requires.
Install (short version)
- Run Outlast once normally, then quit.
- In Steam, right-click Outlast → Manage → Browse local files, then open
Binaries\Win64. - Extract everything from the zip into that folder, next to
OLGame.exe. - Run
Outlast-VR.bat, choose Install, and enter your headset's refresh rate. - Start your VR runtime (Quest Link, Virtual Desktop or SteamVR), then launch Outlast from Steam.
F10 opens the mod menu, G recenters, X picks up the nearest item. Don't turn off Depth of Field (night vision needs it). Full steps, requirements and uninstall are in the README and in README.txt inside the zip.
Known issues
- The night-vision light can still show partly in your own view.
- The HUD centre dot isn't centred in the headset.
- No pickup prompts in VR. X picks up the nearest item within 1.5 m.
- Aiming left/right still comes from your body, not your head.
- Arms/hands may need adjusting in the F10 menu on first run (Arm drive on, hand markers off, right-hand turn).
- Only tested on the Steam version with Meta Quest (Link and Virtual Desktop).
License
