Port Forwarding

DJBenson edited this page Jun 11, 2026 · 2 revisions

The app can use port-forwarding to access your inverter(s) whilst outside of your network.

Right of the bat I'm going to say I do not like nor advocate using this method - choosing a random port (does not guarantee safety)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_through_obscurity] when you expose your inverter to the internet. However, if you want to use this method, you can, but it's on you! I'm not even going to document how to set up port forwarding on your network, just how to enable it in the app.

Enable the Port Forward feature

  • Open the settings sheet and check the Port Forwarding option

NOTE: Only one remote access method can be enabled at any given time so enabling this will disable any other remote access method.

Add a Device

  • From the devices list, scroll down to the bottom to the Manual Connection section
  • Enter the external IP address or domain and the port number and click on Connect

GivLocal will try to connect to that inverter using the details provided. If the inverter is one which is already in your device list, this new IP/domain will be stored for that device so in future you can just click the device instead of manually connecting.

Editing a Device

  • Long press on a device in the list and select Edit
  • Add or update the IP/domain and port for the port forwarded connection and click Save
