Woofers & Piezos

Each driver pair is "one side" left or right, do not under any circumstances connect left and right outputs to two drivers mounted in the same enclosure volume as it could have some nasty and weird side effects when the bass output isn't perfect mono. (Saturnus)

Piezos (Sealing & Sound)

  • To get the best possible sound from these horns. Fill the "rip grooves" with acrylic sealant, and a big blob of sealant in the center of the back plate. Also screw the driver bit off and glue it back together. (Saturnus)
  • Fill on the grooves on the backside of the horn first then make thick circular rings of silicone roughly 1cm apart also on the back part of the horn. Check that the driver bit hasn't come loose. If it has, glue it into place. Cover the back of the driver bit with an even coat of silicone. (Saturnus)
  • Take apart the driver section and glue it back into place. More often than not the serious vibrations it is subjected to inside the cabinet will shake apart a low cost piezo only assembled with 2 small screws. They always improve a lot in sound when that is done. (Saturnus)

Which Silicone to Use?

  • Must be non-acidic (Saturnus) low modulus, neutral cure silicone.
  • There are two types of modulus; Low Modulus and High Modulus. Low Modulus sealants accommodate more movement - this is evident as they are softer to touch. High Modulus sealants accommodate less movement. Based on this, it's easy to reason that Low Modulus is the preferred choice here due to high woofer vibration.
  • Don't ever use vinegar based acrylic sealer as the fumes will eat the speaker cones slowly. (Saturnus)

Sound Adjustments

  • If the piezos are a bit loud you can lower their level by putting a cap in series. Seeing as those are replica types start with about 0.1uF in series and see if that's enough or too little. (Saturnus)

Which Glue to Use?

  • Speaker magnets to plywood: J-B Weld in the US or "Liquid Metal" in Europe, basically 2 pack epoxy. (steveeboy)
  • Front of speakers and grills to plywood: low modulus, neutral cure silicone. GE Silicone II in the US. (steveeboy)

Woofer Mounting

  • Because GW-1058 is not as deep as the original P.audio HP10W, you have to add a piece of wood of about the same radius as the magnets to the center brace on both sides where the magnet goes. That means a 12mm piece with about 120mm diameter. This is easiest made from the front baffle woofer cut-outs. (Saturnus)
  • Remove the rubber surrounds from the grille (not the woofer) and sandwich the edges between the drivers and the baffle, the silicone sealant squishes through the grille holes and hold it all together. (brummiejon)
