EU Directive on accessibility of the websites and mobile applications of public sector bodies

On 26 October 2016 the European Parliament approved the directive on making the websites and mobile apps of public sector bodies more accessible.

The text of the Directive covers websites and mobile apps of public sector bodies with a limited number of exceptions, refers to the standards to make websites and mobile apps more accessible and requires regular monitoring and reporting of public sector websites and mobile apps by Member States.

Timeline

The directive on making the websites and mobile apps of public sector bodies more accessible was published on 2 December 2016 and entered into force on 22 December 2016.

Once the directive is published in the EU Official Journal, member states will have to transpose it into their national laws within 21 months of its date of its entry into force. They then have 12 months to apply the provisions to new websites, 24 months to apply them to existing websites and 33 months to apply them to public sector bodies’ mobile applications.

  • Websites published after September 22, 2018: Accessible by September 22, 2019
  • Websites published after September 22, 2019: Accessible when published

  • Mobile applications must be accessible by May 22, 2021
