Recycler blinking a lot

Hi,

I follow the codelab Android paging and I checkout the step13-19_network_and_database branch.

When I run this branch it seems buggy : when I scroll the are a lot of notify on the recycler (the whole list is blinking a lot of times).

I also comment the section in SearchRepositoriesActivity which scroll every time (scrollToPosition(0)).

Is it the same for you?

You can play with prefetchDistance and initialLoadSize values to prevent multiple request to remote api, e.g.:
you can set PagingConfig(pageSize = NETWORK_PAGE_SIZE, enablePlaceholders = false, prefetchDistance = 2, initialLoadSize = 10) which means you will only allow app to fetch next request after user reach the bottom of the recycler view. Setting initialLoadSize less than pageSize will also prevent app to load multiple page during first load.

Remote Mediator fetching data like 3-4 times at starting
And if you close the internet and retry, the blinking will remain there

It continues blinking. And scroll bars are all confused if you scroll fast.

The problem comes from addLoadStateListener() methode. change the code as below :

binding.progress.isVisible = loadState.refresh is LoadState.Loading
binding.rv.isVisible = loadState.refresh is LoadState.NotLoading

When loading from network + database, use loadState.mediator to define whether the list should be visible or not.
Codelab was updated and now this shouldn't blink anymore
