Use newer version of org.eclipse.osgi than the bundled one

Is it possible to replace the Equinox bundle (org.eclipse.osgi) with a newer version when using the karaf-maven-plugin?
I have a project that uses latest Eclipse components like org.eclipse.equinox.registry depending on more recent versions.

BTW, when will the first milestone or snapshot release of Karaf 4.5.0 be available?
