Breaking changes

• Deprecate Java 17 support now it is at end of life. by @ascopes in #908
  Some previous workarounds to facilitate Java 17 have now been removed as they are no longer needed. This does not
  impact the ability to cross-compile to Java 9 through 20, but the JVM running the tests must now be Java 21 at a
  minimum. Users who wish to remain on Java 17 can continue to use the v6.x release line.
