expand external references in omarchy getting started manual: critical info is not referenced (ASUS laptops info and linux kernel issue with intel VMD)
#3961
There is a mention about disabling Secure Boot in the BIOS. but there is no mentions of other critical information about bios settings that will make IMPOSSIBLE to install Omarchy.
I have an asus strix g16(2025) with intel cpu, and I wanted to install omarchy in a second internal SSD. As I discovered here there are other settings in the BIOS that must be changed in order to make the install of Omarchy possible.
In addition to secure boot, there are reported issues with fastboot, but the NASTIEST ISSUE OF ALL is intel VMD (I have a laptop with intel cpu) see what is VMD. With VMD set to ON in the BIOS, no internal SSD drive will be visible to Linux (at least with archlinux distro from 1/12/2025 with kernel 6.17.9). So you are basically required to switch VMD off in the BIOS. but if you do it. Windows will not boot anymore, and there is potential for corrupting the windows installation. So currently the options for running Omarchy on a laptop with intel VMD are basically
Stop using pre installed windows completely (not actually an option)
Make a backup of windows with original asus drivers and reinstall it after setting VMD off in the BIOS
Make a Win-to-go installation with rufus as suggested here
Disable VMD and boot with the disk-on-key with omarchy iso, and install omarchy. Then every time that you want to use Windows, enter the bios before omarchy boot and set VMD on and set the windows partition on top of the list of the bootable partitions.
When you want to boot back in omarchy, enter again the bios, set the omarchy/limine boot partition on top. and disable VMD, otherwise the ssd where you installed omarchy will not be visible to the system.
