Often laggy when connected to external displays

Hey everyone,

I'm pretty sure there's something I'm overlooking, but after spending a lot of time troubleshooting, I haven't been able to identify the root cause. That's why I wanted to ask here in case someone has experienced something similar.

I'm running Omarchy on a ThinkPad with hybrid graphics (Intel iGPU + NVIDIA dGPU) and hardware resources shouldn't be a limiting factor (64 GB RAM, 6 CPU cores, etc.).

However, whenever I connect one or two external monitors, the system often becomes noticeably laggy. I've already tried a variety of things, including:

• Switching to NVIDIA-only mode
• Enabling hardware cursor rendering
• Using different monitor connection methods (daisy-chaining, HDMI, USB-C)
• Testing with one monitor and with two monitors
• Reducing the external monitors' resolution from 4K to 1080p to match the ThinkPad's internal display

Unfortunately, none of these changes have resolved the issue.

At this point, I'm running out of ideas. Has anyone experienced something similar, particularly with a hybrid GPU setup or comparable hardware? Any suggestions on what else I could investigate would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, just a recommendation if you havent tried this yet. Try checking your hyprland configs to see if its utilizing max_refresh rate of your external monitor. Also, checking with $ hyprctl monitor all might help as well. I had a similar kind of issue and the problem was with the hdmi port of my laptop. I'm using display port and it works fine now. There's also a community tui called hyprmoncfg which might help while configuring your monitor
