Classical Technology — Documentation

Classical Technology (deployed at classicaltech.org, also called DobbsCore) is a suite of learning tools built for a Career & Technical Education technology program:

  • KenKen Puzzles — adaptive number-logic puzzles that scale with each student's rank.
  • SAT / PSAT Practice — official College Board practice questions (Math and English), served adaptively.
  • Ruler Game and Projections — tiered skill builders for reading a ruler and for technical drawing (orthographic views and isometric builds).
  • Skill Maps — interactive visual maps of each CTE course's skills and career connections.
  • Work-Based Learning (WBL) — a full framework for assessing real student work in a school-based enterprise.
  • Habits of Work — a Do Now / Exit Slip behaviour-reflection flow for classes not in a WBL program.
  • Teacher & Student portals — rosters, daily-practice settings, grade tables, and the WBL assessment tools.
  • The DobbsCore Chrome extension — pushes grades and pulls attendance between this platform and PowerSchool.

This wiki is the source of truth. It has two halves.

For Teachers

Start here if you run classes and grade students. These pages avoid jargon.

Page What it covers
Quick Start Signing in for the first time and setting up your first class, step by step.
Managing Classes & Rosters Creating classes, importing rosters from PowerSchool, linking students, mid-year roster changes.
Daily Practice & Assignments Choosing which activities students must do each day, how many, which SAT domains, and per-class assignments for students in more than one class.
How Grading Works Read this carefully. Exactly how a daily-practice grade is computed — completion scores, no-submission scores, absences, enrollment dates, and days a section didn't meet. Worked examples.
Ruler Game The measurement practice game: tiers, scoring, moving between tiers, and its charts.
Projections The technical-drawing game: drawing views from an isometric, building from views, tiers, scoring, and its charts.
Habits of Work The Do Now / Exit Slip behaviour-reflection flow for non-WBL classes — the Gravitas / Dignitas / Pietas framework, daily vs. weekly cadence, rating exit slips, and the PowerSchool sync.
Work-Based Learning Guide Setting up a WBL program, linking classes, phases, work events, quality checks, the daily Do Now / Exit Slip, and credentials.
Importing Micro-Credentials The credential/skill CSV format and how to load it.
The DobbsCore Extension Installing the Chrome extension, first-time setup, and a walkthrough of every button — importing grades to PowerSchool and pulling attendance out of it.

Technical

Page What it covers
Architecture The server, database, authentication, deployment, and how the pieces fit.
Database Schema Every table, grouped and explained, plus the migration and foreign-key conventions.
API Reference Every HTTP endpoint by router.
SAT Question Pipeline Where questions come from, the extraction scripts, and the adaptive-serving algorithm.
Grading Algorithms The exact formulas: KenKen score, rank interpolation, per-day activity grading + absence exemption, WBL scoring, Habits of Work scoring.
Extension Integration How the DobbsCore extension talks to this server and to PowerSchool's internal API.
Deployment & Auth Fly.io deploy, environment variables, and the Google OAuth setup.
Work-Based Learning Internals The WBL data model, phase logic, credentialing rules, and scoring internals.
Habits of Work Internals The non-WBL Do Now / Exit Slip data model, mode logic, routes, and the sync aggregation math.

Repository layout

  • Main app: benjamindobbs/ClassicalKenKen — Express server, static front-end pages, SQLite schema, WBL logic.
  • Extension: benjamindobbs/DobbsCore — the Manifest V3 Chrome extension.
  • This wiki is a separate repo (ClassicalKenKen.wiki). It is kept in step with the code as features change.

The KenKen puzzle engine is a fork of msakuta/WebKenKen.
