Importing Micro Credentials
The fastest way to build a Work-Based Learning program's catalog is a CSV import. It creates credentials, their skills, and the skills' criteria in one pass.
Teacher Portal → Work-Based Learning tab → Catalog sub-tab → Micro-credentials section → Import CSV. There's a Download Template button next to it.
Four columns, in this order. A header row is optional (a row whose first two cells are literally
Credential and Skill is skipped).
| Column | Required | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Credential | yes | The micro-credential's name. Repeated across rows to add more skills to it. |
| Skill | yes | The skill's name. Repeated across rows (under the same or a different credential) to add more criteria to it, or to require it for more than one credential. |
| Description | no | The skill's description. Taken from the first row that names the skill. |
| Criterion | no | One checklist item for the skill (the things an instructor ticks when assessing it). One per row — add more rows with the same Credential + Skill to add more criteria. |
Values with commas must be wrapped in double quotes, standard CSV style.
Credential,Skill,Description,Criterion
Joinery I,Joinery,"Cut and fit joints to spec.",Square cut within tolerance
Joinery I,Joinery,,Tight fit with no visible gaps
Joinery I,Finishing,"Sand and finish a piece.",No visible scratches under raking light
Finishing II,Finishing,,This creates:
- Joinery I — requires Joinery (2 criteria) and Finishing (1 criterion).
- Finishing II — requires Finishing (the same skill, reused; no new criteria on this row).
- Credentials: created if a credential of that name doesn't already exist in the program. New credentials get a default minimum Holistic tier of Meets spec — change it afterward on the credential.
-
Skills: matched by a slug of the skill name (
"Wide-Format Signmaking"→wide-format-signmaking). A new skill is created with a version 1 that is published immediately so it's usable right away. - Criteria: only added to skills created by this import (so re-running an import doesn't pile duplicate criteria onto skills you've since edited by hand).
- Requirement links: every credential is linked to each skill that appeared under it, with a default required demonstrations = 1. Adjust per skill afterward on the credential.
- Skills and credentials keep the order they first appear in the file.
The import is additive and idempotent for structure — re-running it won't duplicate credentials, skills, or requirement links. It will not delete anything you remove from the file; prune by hand in the portal.
After importing, review each credential to set its minimum Holistic tier and per-skill required demonstrations, and publish/retire skill versions as needed.
sample-data/*-microcredentials.csv in the ClassicalKenKen repo (headers
Microcredential,Checkpoint,Description,Subtask) are from the retired micro-credential system,
not this importer. They're kept only as historical reference. Use the Download Template button in
the portal for the current format.
