Lucid 1.0.2 — browser playback fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@braedonsaunders braedonsaunders released this 12 Sep 17:11

Lucid 1.0.2 fixes browser-window selection and misleading enhancement status.

  • A playing video takes over from a paused tab. When two videos play, the focused window takes priority.
  • The menu bar reports enhancement only after the browser confirms it drew processed frames, and drops that claim if drawing stops.
  • Unsupported source resolutions now show an explanation instead of staying on “Waiting for browser video.”
  • Controls still open only when you click Lucid’s top menu bar icon.

The installer contains the Apple Developer ID signed, notarized Lucid app and Chrome/Edge companion. Requires Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later.

After updating the companion folder, click Reload on Lucid Companion in your browser’s Extensions page and refresh your video tabs. For Incognito, enable Allow in Incognito in the companion’s Details. Supported sources are enlarged, unprotected SDR video from 144p through 720p, within your Mac’s performance budget.

Validation: native tests, 14 browser transport tests, model ladder and Safari parity checks, and an installed-app browser presentation check. The r120 model is unchanged.

Lucid 1.0.1 for Mac

Download Lucid for Mac (.dmg)

Apple silicon · macOS 26 or later · Chrome and Edge companion included.

Menu bar controls, only when you ask

  • Lucid creates its icon after macOS finishes launching, with a stable menu bar position and a fixed icon size.
  • Controls open only when you click the aperture icon in the Mac’s top menu bar.
  • Launching, logging in, or reopening Lucid never opens a control surface automatically.
  • Launch at login remains available inside the dropdown.

The video enhancement model and picture pipeline are unchanged from 1.0.0.

Install

  1. Open the DMG and drag Lucid to Applications.
  2. Copy BrowserExtension to a permanent folder. In Chrome or Edge’s extensions page, enable Developer mode, choose Load unpacked, and select that folder.
  3. Open Lucid, then click its icon in the Mac menu bar for controls. Reload your video tab.

Lucid.app is Developer ID signed by Braedon Saunders and notarized by Apple, with its ticket attached. The DMG contains that approved app for direct installation outside the App Store.

Build 103. Checksums and verification receipt are included under Assets.

@braedonsaunders braedonsaunders released this 03 Sep 03:16

Video super-resolution for Apple silicon.

Requires Apple silicon and macOS 26.

Since 0.3.0

  • Works on any site, not just the ones it was tuned on. Every setting used to mean something different depending on how much the video was being stretched — the same numbers were roughly twice as strong on a YouTube 240p player as on the test clip, which is why it looked over-processed there. Gains are now normalised by the upscale factor, and the sharpening lobe is pinned to a fixed pixel spacing.
  • Deblocking sets its own strength from the picture. Compression leaves steps on the transform grid that are not there off it, so the frame itself says how damaged a stream is. No knob, no per-site setting.
  • A control panel that stays open. Click the aperture in the menu bar: on/off, four quality settings, and adjustments and stages when you want them. Everything applies on the next frame.
  • 144p is covered. It was being rejected for being small, which was backwards.
  • Draws through an extension-origin iframe, so sites whose security policy blocks a loopback connection are handled by the same path as everything else rather than a separate overlay.
  • Menu bar only, no Dock icon — a Dock icon makes it a regular app, and activating one throws you out of a full-screen video.

Installing

  1. Open the disk image and drag Lucid to Applications.
  2. Not notarised, so clear the quarantine flag once:
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Lucid.app

  3. Open Lucid and grant Screen Recording.
  4. Load the companion: chrome://extensions → Developer mode → Load unpacked → the BrowserExtension folder from a checkout.

Known limits

  • DRM video is impossible; the frames never reach the page.
  • One video at a time, top frame only.
  • The loopback bridge is not authenticated.
  • Performance measured only on an M4 Pro.

First packaged build.

Lucid enhances low-bitrate browser video in place, inside the page's own video box. Verified on YouTube and Vimeo.

Requires Apple silicon and macOS 26.

Installing

  1. Open the disk image and drag Lucid to Applications.
  2. This build is not notarised, so macOS will refuse to open it on first try. Clear the quarantine flag once:
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Lucid.app

A notarised build needs a paid Apple Developer Program membership; until then this step is unavoidable.
  3. Open Lucid and grant Screen Recording. It needs that to place the enhanced picture over the video, and records nothing.
  4. Load the browser companion: chrome://extensions → Developer mode → Load unpacked → the BrowserExtension folder from a checkout of this repository.

Lucid lives in the menu bar and the Dock menu: an on/off switch and four quality settings.

Known limits

  • DRM video (Netflix and similar) is impossible — the frames are never available to the page.
  • One video at a time, top frame only. No iframes or picture-in-picture.
  • The loopback bridge is not authenticated; any local process can connect to it.
  • Performance has only been measured on an M4 Pro.
