- Receipt Images: Photos you upload as receipts for expenses (stored securely in Firebase Storage).
- Group and Invitation Data: Group names, member lists, and email addresses of people you invite to groups (including people who may not yet have a SplitCost account).
- Device information and usage analytics
- Authentication tokens for your chosen sign-in method
- Push notification tokens (Firebase Cloud Messaging) if you enable notifications
- To provide expense splitting, group management, and settlement features
- To store and display receipt images you upload
- To sync data across your devices
- To send transactional emails such as account verification, password resets, and group invitations
- To send push notifications about group activity (if enabled)
- To process and display pending group invitations
- To improve app functionality and user experience
- Firebase Services: We use Google Firebase (Firestore, Cloud Storage, Authentication, Cloud Functions, Cloud Messaging) to store and process your data.
- Data Security: All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Firestore security rules ensure that expense and group data is only accessible to verified group members.
- Data Retention: Your data is retained until you delete your account or request deletion.
We use the following third-party services:
- Firebase Authentication: For account creation and sign-in (email/password, Google, Facebook)
- Google Cloud Firestore: For data storage
- Firebase Cloud Storage: For receipt image storage
- Firebase Cloud Messaging: For push notifications
- Google Sign-In: For Google authentication
- Facebook Login (Meta): For Facebook authentication
- Google Play Services: For app functionality on Android
These services have their own privacy policies:
When you register with an email address and password, we send a verification email to confirm your identity. You must verify your email before accessing the full features of the app. We may also send password reset emails at your request.
We use Firebase Cloud Messaging to send push notifications about group activity and updates. You can enable or disable push notifications in the app settings (Account → Notification Settings) at any time.
We request camera permission to allow you to take photos of receipts directly within the app. These photos are stored securely and are only accessible to you and members of your expense groups.
When you invite someone to a group using their email address, we store that email address in our database to process the invitation. If the invitee creates a SplitCost account with that email, the invitation is automatically linked to their account. Pending invitations can be cancelled by the person who sent them.
