Description

Updates SocialButtons layout rendering to be consistent across desktop and mobile.

When a lot of strategies are enabled, they all stack on mobile which takes up a good amount of vertical real-estate. To accommodate having a consistent layout, I have reduced the MAX_STRATEGIES_PER_ROW to 5 from 6.

6 on mobile felt a little to congested causing the icons to shrink a bit. This felt like a reasonable change, but open to push back here if we think its important to preserve 6 per row.

Estimated code review effort

🎯 3 (Moderate) | ⏱️ ~25 minutes

  • Areas to check:
    • mobile responsive behavior and the forced single-column condition when there are exactly two strategies and no last authentication;
    • CSS grid width/column calculations after wrapping with minmax(0, ...) to avoid overflow or unexpected shrinking;
    • correctness of shouldShowPreText and interactions with lastAuthenticationStrategy;
    • new tests for completeness and flakiness (fixture setup and SAML→OAuth path).

Poem

🐇 Five buttons line the meadow bright,
One hops single-column in the night.
minmax cradles widths just right,
"Continue with" finds its light.
A joyful nibble — code takes flight.

154-155: Remove unreachable condition.

The check strategies.length < 1 is unreachable because of the early return at lines 80-82, which exits the component when !strategies.length. This condition will never evaluate to true.

Apply this diff to remove the dead code:

-            gridTemplateColumns:
-              strategies.length < 1
-                ? `repeat(1, 1fr)`
-                : `repeat(${row.length}, ${
+            gridTemplateColumns: `repeat(${row.length}, ${
                     rowIndex === 0
                       ? `1fr`
                       : // Calculate the width of each button based on the width of the buttons within the first row.
                         // t.sizes.$2 is used here to represent the gap defined on the Grid component.
                         `calc((100% - (${strategyRowOneLength} - 1) * ${t.sizes.$2}) / ${strategyRowOneLength})`

1-5: LGTM!

The changeset properly documents this patch release with an accurate description of the layout consistency update.

packages/clerk-js/src/ui/elements/SocialButtons.tsx (3)

23-23: Good cleanup of unused import.

The removal of mqu is consistent with eliminating the mobile breakpoint override, and the type-only import follows TypeScript best practices.

31-31: Improved mobile layout constraint.

Reducing the maximum strategies per row from 6 to 5 should prevent button shrinkage on mobile devices when many authentication providers are enabled, improving the overall user experience.

151-163: Consistent layout across screen sizes achieved.

Removing the mobile breakpoint override successfully unifies the grid behavior across desktop and mobile. The gridTemplateColumns calculation properly aligns buttons across rows using the first row's strategy count.

packages/clerk-js/src/ui/elements/__tests__/SocialButtons.test.tsx (2)

12-25: Consider adding explicit types for mocks and props.

The mock callbacks and defaultProps object lack type annotations. Adding explicit types would improve type safety and make it easier to catch mismatches between test mocks and the actual component interface.

Consider applying this diff to add type safety:

+type MockCallback = ReturnType<typeof vi.fn>;
+
 describe('SocialButtons', () => {
-  const mockOAuthCallback = vi.fn();
-  const mockWeb3Callback = vi.fn();
-  const mockAlternativePhoneCodeCallback = vi.fn();
+  const mockOAuthCallback: MockCallback = vi.fn();
+  const mockWeb3Callback: MockCallback = vi.fn();
+  const mockAlternativePhoneCodeCallback: MockCallback = vi.fn();

-  const defaultProps = {
+  const defaultProps: Parameters<typeof SocialButtons>[0] = {
     oauthCallback: mockOAuthCallback,
     web3Callback: mockWeb3Callback,

Alternatively, you can extract the callback types from the SocialButtons component props for even stronger type safety.

217-237: Avoid as any type assertion.

While testing the SAML-to-OAuth conversion edge case is valuable, the as any type assertion bypasses TypeScript's type safety.

Consider using a more type-safe approach:

- // SAML strategy should be converted to OAuth
-      fixtures.clerk.client.lastAuthenticationStrategy = 'saml_google' as any;
+ // SAML strategy should be converted to OAuth
+      fixtures.clerk.client.lastAuthenticationStrategy = 'saml_google' as unknown as typeof fixtures.clerk.client.lastAuthenticationStrategy;

Alternatively, if the fixtures type supports it, explicitly cast to the expected strategy type union.

packages/clerk-js/src/ui/**/*.{ts,tsx}: Element descriptors should always be camelCase
Use element descriptors in UI components to enable consistent theming and styling via appearance.elements
Element descriptors should generate unique, stable CSS classes for theming
Element descriptors should handle state classes (e.g., cl-loading, cl-active, cl-error, cl-open) automatically based on component state
Do not render hard-coded values; all user-facing strings must be localized using provided localization methods
Use the useLocalizations hook and localizationKeys utility for all text and error messages
Use the styled system (sx prop, theme tokens, responsive values) for custom component styling
Use useCardState for card-level state, useFormState for form-level state, and useLoadingStatus for loading states
Always use handleError utility for API errors and use translateError for localized error messages
Use useFormControl for form field state, implement proper validation, and handle loading and error states in forms
Use localization keys for all form labels and placeholders
Use element descriptors for consistent styling and follow the theme token system
Use the Card and FormContainer patterns for consistent UI structure

Use proper TypeScript error types

**/*.{ts,tsx}: Always define explicit return types for functions, especially public APIs
Use proper type annotations for variables and parameters where inference isn't clear
Avoid any type - prefer unknown when type is uncertain, then narrow with type guards
Use interface for object shapes that might be extended
Use type for unions, primitives, and computed types
Prefer readonly properties for immutable data structures
Use private for internal implementation details
Use protected for inheritance hierarchies
Use public explicitly for clarity in public APIs
Prefer readonly for properties that shouldn't change after construction
Prefer composition and interfaces over deep inheritance chains
Use mixins for shared behavior across unrelated classes
Implement dependency injection for loose coupling
Let TypeScript infer when types are obvious
Use const assertions for literal types: as const
Use satisfies operator for type checking without widening
Use mapped types for transforming object types
Use conditional types for type-level logic
Leverage template literal types for string manipulation
Use ES6 imports/exports consistently
Use default exports sparingly, prefer named exports
Use type-only imports: import type { ... } from ...
No any types without justification
Proper error handling with typed errors
Consistent use of readonly for immutable data
Proper generic constraints
No unused type parameters
Proper use of utility types instead of manual type construction
Type-only imports where possible
Proper tree-shaking friendly exports
No circular dependencies
Efficient type computations (avoid deep recursion)

**/*.{jsx,tsx}: Always use functional components with hooks instead of class components
Follow PascalCase naming for components: UserProfile, NavigationMenu
Keep components focused on a single responsibility - split large components
Limit component size to 150-200 lines; extract logic into custom hooks
Use composition over inheritance - prefer smaller, composable components
Export components as named exports for better tree-shaking

🔇 Additional comments (3)
packages/clerk-js/src/ui/elements/__tests__/SocialButtons.test.tsx (3)

1-10: LGTM! Clean imports and fixture setup.

The imports and fixture configuration are appropriate for testing the SocialButtons component within the SignIn context.

26-117: LGTM! Comprehensive coverage of prefix logic without last auth.

The tests properly validate the "Continue with" prefix behavior across different strategy counts:

  • Single strategy shows prefix
  • Two strategies show no prefix (avoiding overflow on mobile)
  • Three+ strategies show no prefix
  • No strategies returns null

The test assertions correctly match the component's shouldShowPreText logic based on remainingStrategiesLength and row isolation.

119-216: LGTM! Thorough validation of last authentication strategy behavior.

The tests comprehensively cover the component behavior when a last authentication strategy is present:

  • Single strategy shows both "Continue with" prefix and "Last used" badge
  • Multiple strategies maintain "Continue with" prefix logic
  • "Last used" badge correctly appears on the last-used strategy
  • Isolated last-auth button in its own row properly shows prefix

The assertions align well with the component's shouldShowPreText logic and row distribution rules.
