Cocktails

Manhattan

My favorite ratios:

  • 2 oz whiskey/rye/bourbon
  • 3/4 oz sweet red vermouth
  • Two dashes Angostura bitters
Typically garnish with a maraschino cherry, sometimes also with an orange peel. Wikipedia suggests the impractical ratio of 5 cL (1.7 oz) whiskey, 2 cL (.68 oz) sweet red vermouth (1 cL = .338 oz).

Another (probably more common) ratio is 2 oz whiskey, 1 oz vermouth, but that ends up a little sweet for me. A dash is typically between 1/8 and 1/4 teaspoon.

Margarita

The ratios:

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 1 oz Cointreau or Triple sec
  • 1 oz lime juice
Freshly squeezed lime juice is ideal, if you are using sweet lime juice from a bottle you might use less than 1 oz, I think it tastes better that way.

Martini

The ratios:

  • 3 oz gin
  • 1/2 oz dry vermouth
Typically garnish with a lemon twist (actually get some oil in the drink), or use an olive. At home I usually add a few drops of lemon or lime in lieu of a lemon twist.

One suggestion says to keep gin and vermouth in the fridge, vermouth is perishable (though it seems to me to last a long time).
